Secondary Heads Association
The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), formerly the Secondary Heads Association (SHA), is a UK professional association for leaders of schools and colleges. History The Association of Head Mistresses (AHM) was founded in 1874. The Headmasters' Association (HMA) was founded in 1890. The Secondary Heads Association was formed in 1977 by the amalgamation of these two organisations. In 1983, deputy heads were allowed to join with other senior teaching staff following in the early 1990s and business managers in 2005. By 2005, two-thirds of the membership were not heads but other senior staff, and the association also had a membership in the college sector, so the name was changed in January 2006 to the current name. Girls' Schools Association
The Girls' Schools Association (GSA) is a professional association of the heads of independent girls' schools. It is a constituent member of the Independent Schools Council. History The GSA can trace its history back to the Association of Headmistresses which was founded in 1874 by Dorothea Beale and Frances Buss. The aim was to agree which issues need challenging and which could be ignored. Buss served as the founding president. Enid Essame of Queenswood School was an honorary secretary before she became president in 1960. She was succeeded by Diana Reader Harris in 1964. She served until 1966 organising a considered response to the influential Plowden Report. Brian Peter Leon Lightman (born 15 June 1955) is a British trade union leader who is the former General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL, based in Leicester). The ASCL has around 18,000 teachers. Early life He attended Westminster City Grammar School from 1966-73. At the University of Southampton he gained a BA in German in 1978 and a Modern Languages PGCE in 1979. Career He taught German and French from 1979-84 at Hazelwick School in Crawley in West Sussex. From 1989-91 he was Curriculum Development Manager and from 1991-95 Deputy Head at St Martin's School, Brentwood. From 1995-99 he was Headmaster at Llantwit Major School in the Vale of Glamorgan, and from 1999-2010 at St Cyres School. The Modern Records Centre (MRC) is the specialist archive service of the University of Warwick in Coventry, England, located adjacent to the Central Campus Library.
