Sears
Sears, Roebuck and Co. ( ), commonly known as Sears, is an American chain of department stores founded in 1892 by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck and reincorporated in 1906 by Richard Sears and Julius Rosenwald, with what began as a mail ordering catalog company migrating to opening retail locations in 1925, the first in Chicago. In 2005, the company was bought by the management of the American big box discount chain Kmart, which upon completion of the merger, formed Sears Holdings. Through the 1980s, Sears was the largest retailer in the United States. In 2018, it was the 31st-largest. After several years of declining sales, Sears's parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 15, 2018. It announced on January 16, 2019, that it had won its bankruptcy auction, and that a reduced number of 425 stores would remain open, including 223 Sears stores. Leslie Sears
Leslie Daniel Sears (12 January 1901 – 27 June 1992) was an English cricketer who played as a left-handed batsman. He was born at Wokingham, Berkshire. Sears made two first-class appearances for Essex against Worcestershire and Derbyshire in the 1925 County Championship, scoring 18 runs at an average of 4.50, with a high score of 16. He later played for Berkshire, making his debut for his native county against Wiltshire in the 1933 Minor Counties Championship. He played Minor counties cricket for Berkshire in 1934 and 1935, making thirteen appearances. He died at Amesbury Abbey care home, Wiltshire on 27 June 1992. His son, also Leslie, played for Berkshire and later served as the county's chairman from 1983 to 2004. His grandsons, Jamie and Richard, also played for Berkshire. Winsome Sears (née Earle; born March 11, 1964) is a Jamaican-born American politician serving as the 42nd lieutenant governor of Virginia. A member of the Republican Party, Sears served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2002 to 2004. She also served on the Virginia Board of Education, and she ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 3rd congressional district in 2004 and for U.S. Senate in 2018. In 2021, Sears was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia. Simon Sears (born 25 January 1984) is a Danish actor. Early life and education Sears was born in Roskilde to an Italian father and Danish mother. Richard Warren Sears (December 7, 1863 – September 28, 1914) was an American manager, businessman and the founder of Sears, Roebuck and Company with his partner Alvah Curtis Roebuck. Early life Sears was born in Stewartville, Minnesota. His father was James Warren Sears, born circa 1828 in New York, a blacksmith and wagon-maker; his mother was Eliza Burton, born in Ohio circa 1843. The family was living in Spring Valley, Minnesota, by June 1870, where his father served as a city councilman and eventually sold his wagon shop in 1875. Both of his parents were of English descent. During his boyhood in Spring Valley, he befriended Almanzo Wilder, the future husband of Laura Ingalls Wilder. In 1880, he started working as a telegraph operator in the town of North Branch, Minnesota, for the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway, and was later transferred to North Redwood Falls, Minnesota, to be station agent there.

Minnie Earl Sears (17 November 1873 – 28 November 1933) formulated the Sears List of Subject Headings, a simplification of the Library of Congress Subject Headings. In 1999, ''American Libraries'' named her one of the "100 Most Important Leaders We Had in the 20th Century". Life and work Sears was a native of Lafayette, Indiana, and was awarded a B.Sc. from Purdue University at age 18, the youngest graduate in her class. She received an M.Sc in 1893.
