Sean Murray (politician)
Sean Murray (15 June 1898 – 26 May 1961) was an Irish Communist political activist, and organiser, born in 1898 the son of a small farmer in Cushendall, Co. Antrim. His grandfather was a United Irishman during the 1798 rebellion. In 1919 Murray joined the IRA and was arrested and detained in the Curragh Camp during the Irish War of Independence. Following the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 he sided with the Anti-Treaty side. In 1924 Murray moved to London and while there joined the Communist Party of Great Britain. He was an attendee of the International Lenin School with Padraic Breslin and James Larkin Jnr. Murray was general secretary of the Communist Party of Ireland (CPI) from 1933 to 1940 and the editor of its newspaper The Irish Workers' Voice. The Communist Party of Ireland (CPI; ga, Páirtí Cumannach na hÉireann) is an all-Ireland Marxist–Leninist communist party, founded in 1933 and re-founded in 1970. It rarely contests elections and has never had electoral success. The party is a member of the International Meeting of Communist and Workers' Parties. Originating as multiple Revolutionary Workers' Groups, located at Connolly House in Dublin, the most prominent early member was James Larkin Jnr (son of James Larkin). After being outlawed under the government of W. T. Cosgrave in 1931 (as part of a wider crackdown on Peadar O'Donnell's Saor Éire and the IRA), it was legalised in 1932 under Éamon de Valera's government and subsequently changed its name to the Communist Party of Ireland in 1933 under Seán Murray, who had attended the Lenin School in Moscow. Irish Worker League
The Irish Worker League was an Irish communist party, established in September 1923 by Jim Larkin, following his return to Ireland. Larkin re-established the newspaper ''The Irish Worker''. The Irish Worker League (IWL) superseded the first Communist Party of Ireland and became Ireland's affiliate with the Communist International. Background In July 1924 Larkin attended the Fifth Comintern Congress, held in Moscow, and was elected to its executive committee. Initially, the League was not organised as a political party and had no founding congress. Its most prominent activity in its first year was to raise funds for republican civil war prisoners. The Communist Party of Northern Ireland was a small communist party operating in Northern Ireland. The party merged with the Irish Workers' Party in 1970 to form the reunited Communist Party of Ireland. Formation The party originated in the 1941 split in the Communist Party of Ireland (CPI), which also produced the Irish Workers' League (IWL) in the Republic of Ireland. The split was due to the difficulties of operating in the Republic, and the unpopularity of the argument that Ireland should enter World War II in the Republic, as opposed to its popularity in Northern Ireland. ''The Irish Worker's Voice'' is an official newspaper of the Communist Party of Ireland (CPI). The paper is published weekly on and off by the various guises under which the Communist party of Ireland was constituted. The first issue was on the 4th of April 1931 initially published by the Revolutionary Workers' Groups and edited by Tom Bell, the paper was relaunched when the W. T. Cosgrave government fell in March 1932, with Brian O'Neill as editor. The paper became the publication of the Communist Party of Ireland founded in 1933. The paper was named the Irish Workers' Voice to distinguish it from Jim Larkin's ''The Irish Worker''. The Irish Worker along with other left wing and republican newspapers were banned in Northern Ireland in 1940.
