Sean Delaney (sportsman)
Sean "Goggie" Delaney (1949 – 12 April 2004) was a Gaelic games sportsman from County Laois, Ireland. Delaney was an inter-county goalkeeper and corner-forward with Laois GAA, and a senior goalkeeper with Portlaoise GAA hurlers. He was also a League of Ireland footballer with Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne and St. Patrick's Athletic. Later in his career as a manager to the Laois ladies' Gaelic football team, he guided the county to its first All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship title in 2001. Early life The son of Morgan and Mai Delaney, Delaney spent his early years in Portlaoise and attended St Mary's CBS where he won a number of underage titles. With the Portlaoise hurlers, he won Laois Minor Hurling Championship titles in 1964 and 1965, and at 17 played in the Laois Junior Hurling Championship decider defeating Camross in 1965. Gaelic games ( ga, Cluichí Gaelacha) are a set of sports played worldwide, though they are particularly popular in Ireland, where they originated. They include Gaelic football, hurling, Gaelic handball and rounders. Football and hurling, the most popular of the sports, are both organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Women's versions of hurling and football are also played: camogie, organised by the Camogie Association of Ireland, and ladies' Gaelic football, organised by the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. While women's versions are not organised by the GAA (with the exception of handball, where men's and women's handball competitions are both organised by the GAA Handball organisation), they are closely associated with it but are still separate organisations. Stradbally GAA (Laois)
Stradbally GAA is a Gaelic football club in Stradbally, County Laois, Ireland. The club was founded in 1889 and its colours are green and white. The club grounds are called Bill Delaney Park after one of the club's most famous sons. Stradbally GAA Club has won 17 Laois Senior Football Championship titles and numerous other titles at junior, intermediate and underage grades. After 18 years in existence the championship of 1905 was won when the team defeated Raheenabrogue by 1-4 to 0-3 at Portlaoise on 21 January 1906. 2016 Stradbally bet Portlaoise in the county championship final and stopped their 10 in a row with a last minute goal. Stradbally () is a town in County Laois, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Overview- It is located in the midlands of Ireland along the N80 road, about from Portlaoise and from Dublin. It is a townland, a Civil parishes in Ireland, civil parish and historic Barony (Ireland), barony. It is known for its annual Steam Rally and the Electric Picnic music festival. History The history of Stradbally dates to the 6th century. The area was called "Mon-au-Bealing" and Colman Mac ua Laoise, a disciple of St. Columba, established a monastery at Oughaval (County Laois), Oughaval, close to the town and within the present-day parish. In 1447 Franciscans came to Mon-au-Bealing and by 1550 a small village had developed. The name Stradbally (Sraidbhaile Laoise) was in use at least from the 16th century as it is referred to by that name in the Annals of the Four Masters.
