Seal Island, South Africa
Seal Island is a small land mass located off the northern beaches of False Bay, near Cape Town in South Africa. The island is so named because of the great number of Cape fur seals that occupy it. It is in area and home to 64,000 cape fur seals. It is also home to seabirds, and it is likely that non-marine species fly there to breed as well . The island is an outcrop of the Cape granite, and rises no more than about above the high tide mark. The island is long and narrow – . There is no vegetation, soil of any significance, or beach. A radar mast was built on the island during World War II by a crew who lived in prefabricated huts for the duration of the construction but this tower gradually succumbed to corrosion and was blown over in a winter storm in 1970. The Carracks
The Carracks ( kw, Kerrek, meaning ''rocks'') and Little Carracks ( kw, Karrek an Ydhyn, meaning ''rock of the birds'') are a group of small rocky inshore islands off the Atlantic north coast of west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The name comes from "carrek", the Cornish language word for 'rock'. The Little Carracks were still known as ''Carrack an Heythen'' c. 1920. The islands are in Zennor civil parish. The islands are located between Zennor and St Ives and are approximately off shore; The Little Carracks are between the Carracks and Towednack Quae Head which is east of the islands. Robben Island
Robben Island ( af, Robbeneiland) is an island in Table Bay, 6.9 kilometres (4.3 mi) west of the coast of Bloubergstrand, north of Cape Town, South Africa. It takes its name from the Dutch word for seals (''robben''), hence the Dutch/Afrikaans name ''Robbeneiland'', which translates to ''Seal(s) Island''. Robben Island is roughly oval in shape, long north–south, and wide, with an area of . It is flat and only a few metres above sea level, as a result of an ancient erosion event. It was fortified and used as a prison from the late-seventeenth century until 1996, after the end of apartheid. ''Seal Island'' is a 1948 American documentary film directed by James Algar. Produced by Walt Disney, it was the first installment of the ''True-Life Adventures'' series of nature documentaries. It won an Oscar in 1949 for Best Short Subject (Two-Reel). Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge
Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge is a island off the coast of Maine, United States near Matinicus Island that is part of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge. During any given summer season, over 100 species of birds are observed by researchers on the island. It is home to colonies of many types of seabirds, including Atlantic puffins, double-crested cormorants, razorbills, Leach's storm petrels, eiders, and black guillemots. Seal Island is the last refuge for the dwindling great cormorant population in the Gulf of Maine, with 35 pairs in 2018. A policy of eliminating predatory gulls preceded the recolonization of the island by a large mixed band of Arctic terns and common terns. The Seal Island Historic District is a National Historic Landmark District located on the islands of St. George and St. Paul in the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea of Alaska. These islands are home to northern fur seal herds which were actively hunted by indigenous populations and later by many nationalities.
