Strathspey Thistle Football Club are a senior football club from Grantown-on-Spey in the Highlands of Scotland. They currently play in the Highland Football League, but formerly played in Junior football from 1993. They were accepted into the Highland League on 25 February 2009 and entered the league for the start of the 2009–10 season. Their first match was an 8–1 defeat against Wick Academy. Grantown-on-Spey ( gd, Baile nan Granndach) is a town in the Highland Council Area, Counties of Scotland, historically within the county of Moray. It is located on a low plateau at Freuchie beside the river Spey at the northern edge of the Cairngorms, Cairngorm mountains, about south-east of Inverness ( by road). The town was founded in 1765 as a New town, planned settlement and was originally called simply Grantown after Sir James Grant, 8th Baronet, Sir James Grant. The addition 'on Spey' was added by the burgh council in 1898. The town has several listed 18th and 19th century buildings, including several large hotels and serves as a regional centre for tourism and services in the Strathspey, Scotland, Strathspey region. The Scottish Junior Football Association (SJFA) is an affiliated national association of the Scottish Football Association and is the governing body for the junior grade of football in Scotland. The term "junior" refers to the level of football played, not the age of the players. The closest equivalent terminology would be non-League football in England, the difference being that junior football in Scotland was not similarly integrated into its football league system until 2021. Founded in 1886, the SJFA is responsible for disciplinary matters within the grade, certain player registration procedures and organising the annual Scottish Junior Cup. The 2009–10 Highland Football League was competed for by 18 teams. This is three-up on the previous season after Formartine United, Strathspey Thistle and Turriff United were voted in.
