Sculptures Of Swedish Rulers
Sculptures of Swedish rulers have been created since the 17th century. Most of the Swedish royal sculptures are located in Stockholm. Many of these can be seen in the city center around Stockholm Palace, in Gamla stan, Riddarholmen, Kungsträdgården and Stadshusterassen. Uppsala and Rottneros Park have three sculptures each. Gothenburg, Karlskrona, Örebro and Halmstad have two sculptures each. Stockholm () is the Capital city, capital and List of urban areas in Sweden by population, largest city of Sweden as well as the List of urban areas in the Nordic countries, largest urban area in Scandinavia. Torkel Knutsson
Torkel (Tyrgils or Torgils) Knutsson (d. 1306) was Lord High Constable of Sweden, member of the Privy Council of Sweden (''Riksråd''), and virtual ruler of Sweden during the early reign of King Birger Magnusson (1280–1321). Biography Torkel hailed from an old noble family of West Geatish ancestry and was related to the House of Bjelbo (''Folkungaätten''). He was first mentioned in 1282. In documents from 1288, he is mentioned as a knight and a member of the privy council (''Riksråd''). Career Before his death, King Magnus Ladulås (ca. 1240-1290) ordered his kinsman, Torgils Knutsson, the Constable of the Realm, to be the guardian of his son Birger. When King Magnus Ladulås died, Torkel became regent for the underage Birger Magnusson (1280–1321). Stockholm City Hall
Stockholm City Hall ( sv, Stockholms stadshus, ''Stadshuset'' locally) is the seat of Stockholm Municipality in Stockholm, Sweden. It stands on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island, next to Riddarfjärden's northern shore and facing the islands of Riddarholmen and Södermalm. It houses offices and conference rooms as well as ceremonial halls. It is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet and is one of Stockholm's major tourist attractions. Kornhamnstorg
Kornhamnstorg (Swedish: "Grain Harbour Square") is a public square in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. Known as ''Kornhaffn'' (1427), ''Jernboen'' (1586), ''Åkaretorget'' (1644), and ''Kornhampns torget'' (1651), it is connected to the streets: Munkbroleden, Lilla Nygatan, Stora Nygatan, Torgdragargränd, Funckens Gränd, Triewaldsgränd. The statue of a man drawing a bow on the square, often misinterpreted as depicting William Tell, was inaugurated in 1916 as an homage to Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson, leader of the Engelbrekt rebellion (1434–1436) against the German-dominated government of Eric of Pomerania. Carl Gustaf Qvarnström
Carl Gustaf Qvarnström (23 March 1810, Stockholm - 5 March 1867, Stockholm) was a Swedish sculptor and painter. Biography His father, , was a chamber servant (kammartjänare) for Princess Sofia Albertina. At the age of eleven, he entered the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts preparatory school and won his first award when he was twelve. Some chalk portraits he did of the Royal Family led to his receiving financial support. By the age of fourteen, he was presenting drawings at the Academy's exhibitions after studying at the modeling school, under the direction of Gustaf Erik Hasselgren and Fredric Westin. When the sculptor, Johan Niclas Byström, came home from Italy in 1829, he became his student and largely abandoned painting. Thanks to an academic fellowship, he was able to go to Italy himself in 1836 and stayed for six years; mostly in Rome. Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson
Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson (1390s – 27 April/4 May 1436) was a Swedish nobleman, rebel leader and military boss of German ancestry. He was the leader of the Engelbrekt rebellion in 1434 against Eric of Pomerania, king of the Kalmar Union. Engelbrekt Parish (''Engelbrekts församling'') and Engelbrekt Church (''Engelbrektskyrkan'') in the Church of Sweden Diocese of Stockholm were both named in his honor. Roskilde
Roskilde ( , ) is a city west of Copenhagen on the Danish island of Zealand. With a population of 51,916 (), the city is a business and educational centre for the region and the 10th largest city in Denmark. Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen
Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen (born Anne Marie Brodersen; 21 June 1863 – 21 February 1945) was a Danish sculptor. Her preferred themes were domestic animals and people, with an intense, naturalistic portrayal of movements and sentiments. She also depicted themes from Nordic mythology. She was "one of the first women to be taken seriously as a sculptor," a trend-setter in Danish art for most of her life. She was married to the Danish composer Carl Nielsen. Early life Brodersen was born on Thygesminde, a large farm estate in South Stenderup, near Kolding. Her father Povl Julius Brodersen served in the German Dragoons before purchasing the farm. He married Friderikke Johanne Kirstine Gilling, who was his housekeeper. The Brodersens were "successful, daring people", some of the first to import livestock directly from England.
