Scribbler (robot)
The Scribbler is a small, low-cost fully programmable intelligent robot with multiple sensor systems. It is capable of auto navigation and interaction with its environment. The Scribbler is a combined effort of three companies: Parallax Inc., Element Products Inc., and Bueno Systems Inc. In May 2010, the Scribbler was selling for a retail price of around $100 USD. A newer version of the Scribbler, Scribbler 2, came out in the fourth quarter of 2010. The Scribbler has a built in BASIC Stamp 2 microcontroller brain. For inputting sensory information, the Scribbler has three photoresistor light sensors, infrared emitter, and infrared detector. Additional add-ons can be bought to give the robot more capabilities through the serial port. For example, a bluetooth emitter/receiver or a wireless card can be bought to interface with the robot. A robot is a machine—especially one programmable by a computer—capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically. A robot can be guided by an external control device, or the control may be embedded within. BASIC Stamp
The BASIC Stamp is a microcontroller with a small, specialized BASIC interpreter (PBASIC) built into ROM. It is made by Parallax, Inc. and has been popular with electronics hobbyists since the early 1990s. Technical specifications Although the BASIC Stamp 2 has the form of a 24 pin DIP chip, it is in fact a small printed circuit board (PCB) that contains the essential elements of a microprocessor system: * A Microcontroller containing the CPU, a built in ROM containing the BASIC interpreter, and various peripherals * 2kB of i²C EEPROM memory. * A clock, in the form of a ceramic resonator * Voltage regulator * External input/output The end result is that a hobbyist can connect a 9 V battery to a BASIC Stamp and have a complete system. Institute For Personal Robots In Education
Institute for Personal Robots in Education (IPRE) was initiated by a $1 million grant from Microsoft Research to Bryn Mawr College and the Georgia Institute of Technology and announced in July 2006. IPRE is designing introductory computer science curricula centered on a Personal Robot. Their vision is that each student will purchase a small, inexpensive robot at the bookstore which they will use throughout their classes in exploring computer science. The hope is that the robot will cost about as much as a textbook. IPRE will develop the hardware, software, and curricular materials for these courses. The software being developed for introductory computer science courses is called Myro, short for My Robot, and is based in part on Pyro from Python Robotics.
