Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a worldwide youth movement employing the Scout method, a program of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities, including camping, woodcraft, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, and sports. Girl Guides (known as Girl Scouts in the United States and some other countries) is a worldwide movement, originally and largely still designed for girls and women only. The Girl Guides Association of Zambia is the national Guiding organization of Zambia. It serves 23,662 members (as of 2009). Founded in 1924 as the ''Guides of Northern Rhodesia'', the girls-only organization became a full member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1966. The Zambia Scouts Association is the national Scouting association of Zambia and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1965. It shares history with Zimbabwe and Malaŵi, with which it was linked for decades. As of 2004 the Association had 7,396 members. History Scouting in the former Rhodesia and Nyasaland started in 1909 when the first Boy Scout troop was registered. The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM ) is the largest international Scouting organization. WOSM has 173 members. These members are recognized national Scout organizations, which collectively have around 43 million participants. WOSM was established in 1922, and has its operational headquarters at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and its legal seat in Geneva, Switzerland. Scouting has been active in displaced persons camps (DP camps) and in the lives of refugees since World War I. During and after World War II, until the early 1950s, Scouting and Guiding flourished in these camps. These Scout and Girl Guide groups often provided postal delivery and other basic services in displaced persons camps. This working system was duplicated dozens of times around the world.
