Scottish Target Shooting (STS) is the governing body for shooting sports in Scotland. STS represents and supports its clubs and members in promoting and developing shooting sports in Scotland, engaging with sportscotland, Team Scotland, the Scottish Government, British Shooting and others. Shooting sports is a group of competitive sport, competitive and recreational sporting activities involving proficiency tests of accuracy, precision and speed in shooting — the art of using ranged weapons, mainly small arms (firearms and airguns, in forms such as handguns, rifles and shotguns) and bow and arrow, bows/crossbows. Shooting sports can be categorized by equipment, shooting distances, shooting target, targets, time limits and degrees of sport of athletics, athleticism involved. Shooting sports may involve both team and individual competition, and team performance is usually assessed by summing the scores of the individual team members. Sportscotland (officially styled sport), formerly the Scottish Sports Council, is the national agency for sport in Scotland. The Scottish Sports Council was established in 1972 by royal charter. The body works in partnership with public, private and voluntary organisations. In 2002/03 sportscotland invested approximately £48 million of government grants and lottery funds. British Shooting is the national governing body for International Shooting Sport Federation, ISSF shooting sport disciplines in the United Kingdom. The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the Friendly Games or simply the Comm Games, are a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.
