Scotch Professors
The Scotch Professors were Scottish football players of the late 19th century who moved south to play for clubs participating in the English Football League during the period when football had become professional in England but remained (theoretically) amateur in Scotland. Style of play The origin of the name was based upon the distinctive Scottish style of play – described at the time as being " combination football" – which was centred upon a passing game with greater teamwork as opposed to the individualistic, dribbling style common in England at the time. The Scots ( sco, Scots Fowk; gd, Albannaich) are an ethnic group and nation native to Scotland. Historically, they emerged in the early Middle Ages from an amalgamation of two Celtic-speaking peoples, the Picts and Gaels, who founded the Kingdom of Scotland (or ''Alba'') in the 9th century. James Miller (10 February 1871 – 5 February 1907) was a Scottish footballer who played for Sunderland, Rangers and the Scotland national football team as a forward. Club career Initially playing with hometown village team Annbank, Miller was one of several skilled Scottish players brought to Sunderland by manager Tom Watson, which collectively became known as the 'team of all talents'. Jimmy Hannah
James Hannah (17 March 1869 – 1 December 1917) was a Scottish footballer who played for Sunderland and the Scottish national football team as a winger. Football career Hannah signed for Sunderland Albion from Third Lanark, and thereafter moved to Sunderland where he made his debut on 3 October 1891 against Everton in a 2–1 win at Newcastle Road. He played for the Wearsiders between 1891 and 1897 and won English League championship medals in 1893 and 1895 (teammates included David Hannah, no relation). His goalscoring record in the FA Cup was noteworthy, as he scored 10 times in 16 games in the competition, including a hat-trick in Sunderland's record 11–1 win over Fairfield F.C. on 2 February 1895 in the first round. John Campbell (footballer, Born 1869)
John Campbell (19 February 1869 – 8 June 1906) was a Scottish footballer who played as a forward, primarily for Sunderland. He was the stepbrother of Sunderland manager Robert Campbell. Club career Having won the Scottish Cup with Renton in 1888, followed by the 1888 'World Championship' a few months later, Campbell switched to English football along with teammates John Harvey and David Hannah; he made his debut for Sunderland on 18 January 1890 against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup first round; Sunderland lost the game 4–2 after extra time at Leamington Road. The 1895 World Championship was a football match that took place at Tynecastle Park on 27 April 1895 between the winner of the English Football League First Division, Sunderland, and Scottish League Division One, Heart of Midlothian. The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions.
