Scone Railway Station
Scone railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the Main Northern line in Scone, in the Upper Hunter Shire local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The station serves the town of Scone and opened on 17 April 1871. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Station configuration The station has one platform and a passing loop. The original John Whitton 1871 brick building remains. In June 2014 the layout was reconfigured with the former loop becoming the main line and the platform line the loop. The complex includes a type 4 brick second class station building, erected in 1871; a standard timber skillion roof type 3 signal box; and an outshed. Scone, New South Wales
Scone is a town in the Upper Hunter Shire in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. At the 2006 census, Scone had a population of 5,624 people. It is on the New England Highway north of Muswellbrook about 270 kilometres north of Sydney, and is part of the New England (federal) and Upper Hunter (state) electorates. Scone is in a farming area and is also noted for breeding Thoroughbred racehorses. It is known as the 'Horse capital of Australia'. History Allan Cunningham was the first recorded European person to travel into the Scone area, reaching the Upper Dartbrook and Murrurundi areas in 1823. Surveyor Henry Dangar travelled through the area, prior to passing over the Liverpool Range above Murrurundi in 1824. The first properties in the area were Invermein and Segenhoe in 1825. CityRail was a passenger railway brand operated by the State Rail Authority from 1989 to 2003 and by RailCorp from 2003 to 2013 with services in and around Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, the three largest cities in New South Wales, Australia.
