Scobie Breasley Medal
The Scobie Breasley Medal is an annual Jockeys award, first presented by Racing Victoria Limited in 1996, that recognises excellence in race riding on Melbourne racetracks. Votes are cast by racing stewards at each meeting and are awarded on a 3-2-1 basis to what they deem to be the best ride of the day. It is named in honour of the jockey Scobie Breasley, the first person inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Racing Victoria Limited
Racing Victoria Limited, as the governing principal racing authority, has responsibilities to develop, encourage, promote and manage the conduct of Thoroughbred horse racing in the State of Victoria, Australia. It assumed this responsibility, from the Victoria Racing Club, on 19 December 2001. It was established with the support of Country Racing Victoria, Melbourne Racing Club, Moonee Valley Racing Club, Victoria Racing Club, other racing industry bodies, and the Victorian State Government. Scobie Breasley
Arthur Edward "Scobie" Breasley (7 May 1914 – 21 December 2006) was an Australian jockey. He won the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne five times: 1942-45 consecutively on Tranquil Star, Skipton, Counsel and St Fairy; then on Peshawar in 1952. He also won Epsom Derby, The Derby twice, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe once. Early life Breasley was born in 1914 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales and was christened Arthur Edward, but while still very young was given the nickname "Scobie", after the famous Australian trainer and jockey James Scobie (horseman), James Scobie. Career Breasley rode 3,251 winners during his career, including over 1,000 in Australia and 2,161 in Horseracing in the United Kingdom, Britain. Damien Oliver
Damien Oliver (born 22 June 1972) is an Australian thoroughbred racing jockey. Oliver comes from a racing family; his father Ray Oliver had a successful career until his death in a race fall during the 1975 Kalgoorlie cup in Western Australia. In 2008 Oliver was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Racing career Oliver's riding career started in 1988 and he completed his apprenticeship with his stepfather Lindsey Rudland and Lee Freedman. His first win as an apprentice was in March 1988 on Mr. Gudbud, at Bunbury, Western Australia and his first feature race win was the AJC Warwick Stakes. Unfortunately he suffered a series of injuries including a broken spine in March 2005, sustained in a fall at Moonee Valley. He returned to riding after that back injury and rode the Japanese horse Pop Rock in the 2006 Melbourne Cup, which finished second to stablemate Delta Blues. Craig Williams (jockey)
Craig Williams (born 23 May 1977) is a Victoria, Australia based jockey. He has won multiple Group One, group one races in Australia and worldwide, including the 2019 Melbourne Cup. Williams rode his first race in 1993. In 2011, he almost achieved a unique Australian horse racing triple, in winning the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. After winning the first two on Southern Speed and Pinker Pinker respectively, Williams was suspended for careless riding during the 2011 Bendigo Cup. The horse he was scheduled to ride in the Melbourne Cup, Dunaden, went on to win with last-minute replacement jockey Christophe Lemaire on board. In the 2012 Caulfield Cup, Williams rode Dunaden to an unprecedented victory. Dwayne Dunn
Dwayne Dunn (born 1973 or 1974) is an Australian jockey based in Victoria, Australia, Victoria. He won the Scobie Breasley Medal in 2016. Dunn began his career in 1989. He rode his first Group One winner on Undoubtedly in the 2005 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse, Caulfield. He holds the jockeys’ record for numbers of wins in the Blue Diamond with five. He rode All Too Hard 10 times for seven wins, four of them at Group One level. As of late May 2021, he has ridden 2,185 winners, including 24 in Group One races. Dunn suffered a neck fracture and a brain injury at Moonee Valley Racecourse, Moonee Valley in September 2020 when his mount Shot Of Irish reared in the starting gate. After attempting to resume riding he found the brain trauma was too severe and long-lasting, and in May 2021 he decided to concentrate on achieving a full recovery, leaving his riding future in doubt. Michael Rodd (jockey)
Michael Rodd (born 19 January 1982 in Manly, New South Wales) is an Australian jockey who is best known for riding Efficient (horse), Efficient to victory in the 2007 Melbourne Cup. Rodd has also been successful in the 2008 Cox Plate, riding Maldivian and in the 2006 Victoria Derby, again riding Efficient. He began racing in 2000. Luke Nolen (born 12 March 1980) is an Australian people, Australian jockey best known for riding mare Black Caviar (horse), Black Caviar to 22 of her 25 consecutive wins. Nolen is from the rural town of Manangatang in northern Victoria, Australia, Victoria. Beginning in Queensland country races, he has been riding professionally since 1998. As of 9 April 2022, Nolen has ridden 1,835 winners, including 38 in Group One races. He won 14 of his 38 Group One winners on Black Caviar. Kerrin McEvoy
Kerrin McEvoy (born 28 October 1980) is an Australian jockey who is best known for winning three Melbourne Cups. In Europe, McEvoy rode several big winners for Godolphin including Rule of Law in the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster in 2004 and Ibn Khaldun in the Racing Post Trophy, also at Doncaster in 2007. McEvoy rose to fame by riding Brew to victory in the 2000 Melbourne Cup.
