Schwanda The Bagpiper
''Schwanda the Bagpiper'' ( cs, Švanda dudák), written in 1926, is an opera in two acts (five scenes), with music by Jaromír Weinberger to a Czech libretto by Miloš Kareš, based on the drama ''Strakonický dudák aneb Hody divých žen'' (''The Bagpiper of Strakonice'') by Josef Kajetán Tyl. Performance history Its first performance was in Prague at the Czech National Opera on 27 April 1927; and the first German production followed (in the translation by Max Brod as ''Schwanda der Dudelsackpfeifer''), at Breslau on 16 December 1928. Karel Hruška
Karel Hruška (14 June 1891 – 17 October 1966) was a Czechoslovak tenor, radio personality, and actor of the stage and film. He was an unusual singer for his day in that he recorded and performed both classical and popular music. Possessing a great comic talent, he specialized in creating character parts on the opera stage. He was a much loved Principál komediantů in Bedřich Smetana's ''The Bartered Bride'', notably portraying the role a total of 855 times during his career. Emil Pollert, born Emil Popper (20 January 1877, Liblice at Mělník – 23 October 1935, Prague) was a Czech opera singer at the National Theatre in Prague, in his time the main representative of bass roles. Life Pollert's talent was discovered by his brother, who in his adulthood financed his singing lessons with Francis Pivoda and Moritz Wallerstein.
