Schley County, Georgia
Schley County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. (Schley is properly pronounced "sly", as this is the correct pronunciation of Governor William Schley, for whom the county is named). As of the 2020 census, the county's population was 4,547. The county seat is Ellaville. Schley County is part of the Americus, GA Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The county was created by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on December 22, 1857, and is named for William Schley, United States Representative and thirty-sixth governor of Georgia. The first county courthouse was built in 1858. The present Schley County Courthouse dates from 1899. William Schley
William Schley (December 15, 1786 – November 20, 1858) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician. Biography Schley was born on December 15 (some sources say December 10), 1786 in Frederick, Maryland, the original locus and domicile of the Schley family in North America. With others of the family he migrated to Augusta, Georgia, in the early 19th century, where he was educated at the academies of Louisville, Georgia, Louisville and Augusta, Georgia. He later studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1812 and practiced law in Augusta. From 1825 through 1828 he was a Superior Court judge of the Middle District in Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. In 1830 William Schley became a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. In 1832 and again in 1834, he was elected as a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat to the United States House of Representatives. State Route 3 (SR 3) is a state highway that travels south-to-north through portions of the western part of the U.S. state of Georgia, roughly paralleling Interstate 75 (I-75). The highway travels from its southern terminus at the Florida state line, where SR 3 and SR 300 both reach their southern terminus, concurrent with US 19. Macon County, Georgia
Macon County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,740. The county seat is Oglethorpe. The Macon County Courthouse is located in Oglethorpe. History Macon County was created in 1837 from parts of Houston ("house-ton") and Marion counties, effective December 14 of that year. The 91st county, it was named for the then-recently deceased General Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina, who served in the U.S. Congress for 37 years and ran for U.S. vice president. Taylor County, Georgia
Taylor County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,906. The county seat and largest city is Butler. History Taylor County was created on January 15, 1852, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly from portions of Macon, Marion and Talbot counties. The County is named for Zachary Taylor, twelfth President of the United States. Taylor County is also widely known for its history of racism and Jim Crow era subjugation of its African-American populace, which continued long into the 20th century. Route description SR 271 begins at an intersection with US 19/ SR 3 southeast of Ellaville. The route heads east, and then northeast, to the unincorporated community of LaCrosse, where it intersects Lacrosse Road and a Norfolk Southern Railway line. The highway continues northeast, and curves to the east until it intersects Schley County Road 19.
