Scheemda () is a village with a population of 2,445 in the municipality of Oldambt in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. Scheemda was a separate municipality until 2010, when it merged with Reiderland and Winschoten to form the municipality of Oldambt. History Until 2010, Scheemda was a separate municipality with the population centers Heiligerlee, Midwolda, Nieuw-Scheemda, Nieuwolda, Oostwold, Scheemda, 't Waar and Westerlee. On 1 January 2010, the municipality merged into Oldambt. Scheemda Railway Station
Scheemda (; abbreviation: Sda) is an unstaffed railway station in Scheemda in the Netherlands. It is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Zuidbroek and Winschoten in the province of Groningen. The station building was designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode and completed in 1865. The train services started on 1 May 1868. Trains have been operated by Staatsspoorwegen (1868–1937), Nederlandse Spoorwegen (1938–2000), NoordNed (2000–2005), and Arriva (2005–present). There are two tracks and an island platform at the station. Two local train services with trains in both directions call at Scheemda twice per hour. There are also connections to four regional bus services provided by Qbuzz. Nieuw-Scheemda
Nieuw-Scheemda (also: ''Scheemderhamrik''; Gronings: ''Nij Scheemte'') is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Groningen (province), Groningen. It is a part of the municipality of Oldambt (municipality), Oldambt. The village has grown together with 't Waar, however both are considered separate entities even though they share facilities. History Nieuw-Scheemda was established in 1659 as a daughter settlement of Scheemda. In 1545, a first dike was built along the Dollart. In 1597, a second dike was constructed which resulted in more than of additional land to be cultivated. Nieuw-Scheemda is located in the reclaimed land. In 1661, the church of the village was constructed. There are three polder mills in Nieuw-Scheemda. Oldambt () is a municipality with a population of in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It was established in 2010 by merging the municipalities of Reiderland, Scheemda, and Winschoten. t Waar () is a village in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Oldambt, just north of the village of Nieuw-Scheemda.''ANWB Topografische Atlas Nederland'', Topografische Dienst and ANWB, 2005. History The villages was first mentioned in 1781 as 't Waar, and means sluice. It refers to a sluice constructed in 1622 in the to regulate the water flow. 't Waar was home to 451 people in 1840. Between 1910 and 1934, there was a joint railway station with Nieuw-Scheemda on the Zuidbroek to Delfzijl railway line. On 15 April 1945, the village celebrate its liberation when German soldiers threw handgrenades into the crowd killing five civilians and one Polish soldier. Midwolda
Midwolda () is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Oldambt, about 7 km northwest of Winschoten. Midwolda was a separate municipality until 1990, when it was merged with Scheemda. History The village was first mentioned in 1282 as de Middewalda, and means middle woods. Midwolda is a road village which developed in the Middle Ages at the edge of the former peninsula of Winschoten. The All Saints' Flood of 1570 caused an extension of the Dollart, and the village moved to the south near the dike constructed in 1565. The old church remained behind, however the tower collapsed in 1667, and the church was demolished in 1738. The current Dutch Reformed church was built between 1738 and 1740, and has a tower from 1708. The ''borg'' Ennemaborg might date from before 1391. Nieuwolda is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Groningen (province), Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Oldambt (municipality), Oldambt, about 9 km southeast of Delfzijl. Nieuwolda was a separate municipality until 1990, when it was merged with Scheemda. History The village was first mentioned in 1711 as Midde en Nieuwolda, and means "new woods". Reiderland
Reiderland () is a former municipality in the province Groningen in the northeastern Netherlands, which was founded in 1990 during a large municipal reorganisation. The former municipalities Finsterwolde and Bad Nieuweschans were abolished and added to Beerta. In 1992, the new municipality was given its current name. In 2010 it joined in the municipality Oldambt. Winschoten (; gos, Winschoot) is a city with a population of 18,518 in the municipality of Oldambt in the northeast of the Netherlands. It is the largest city in the region of Oldambt in the province of Groningen which has 38,213 inhabitants. Winschoten received its city rights in 1825. Pieter Smit
Pieter Smit (11 October 1963 – 10 April 2018) was a Dutch police officer and politician, belonging to the Democrats 66 (D66) party. Smit was born in Delfzijl. He held a commanding position in the former Haaglanden police forceConcerning The Hague and surrounding municipalities. before entering full-time into politics. He was elected into the municipal council of Zoetermeer in 1994 and became an alderman in 2006. From 1 September 2010 until his death in April 2018, he was mayor of Oldambt. He was the first non-acting mayor after the establishment of this new Groningen municipality on 1 January 2010. He also performed several ancillary functions, like commissioner of Groningen Airport Eelde. Pieter Smit died suddenly of a cardiac arrest in his hometown Scheemda, aged 54.
