Scattergood Baines (radio Series)
''Scattergood Baines'' is an American serial radio program that was broadcast in two versions, one on CBS from 1937 until 1942 and the other on Mutual in 1949. Both versions were based on stories written by Clarence Budington Kelland and published in magazines. Characters The title character operated a hardware store in Cold River, a small town, and used persuasion to encourage people to do what was in their best interests. Mirandy Baines was his wife. Hippocrates Brown, his helper in the store, did as little work as possible. Pliny Pickett was a railroad conductor. Ed Potts was a mechanic who was active in town affairs, and Clara Potts was his nagging, but beautiful, wife. Jimmy Baines was the son whom Scattergood adopted as an infant, and Dodie Black was Jimmy's birth mother. Harvey Fox at one point schemed with Black to help her try to gain custody of her son. J. Clarence Budington Kelland
Clarence Budington "Bud" Kelland (July 11, 1881 – February 18, 1964) was an American writer. Prolific and versatile, he was a prominent literary figure in his heyday, and he described himself as "the best second-rate writer in America". Kelland had a long career as a writer of fiction, stretching from 1913 to 1960. He was published in many magazines, including ''The Saturday Evening Post'' and ''The American Magazine''. A prolific writer, his output included 60 novels and some 200 short stories. His best known juvenile works were the Mark Tidd series and the Catty Atkins series, while his best known adult work was the Scattergood Baines series. Other notable adult books by Kelland include ''Conflict'' (1920), ''Rhoda Fair'' (1925), ''Hard Money'' (1930), ''Arizona'' (1939), and ''Dangerous Angel'' (1953). Margaret Field
Margaret Field (née Morlan; May 10, 1922 – November 6, 2011) was an American film actress usually billed as Maggie Mahoney after her marriage to actor Jock Mahoney. The mother of actress Sally Field, she was best known for her work in two science-fiction films, ''The Man from Planet X'' (1951) and ''Captive Women'' (1952) and played dozens of roles in various television series. Early years Field was born in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Joy Beatrice (née Bickeley) and Wallace Miller Morlan. Late in the 1930s, her family and she moved to Pasadena, California. William Fawcett (actor)
William Fawcett Thompson (September 8, 1894 – January 25, 1974) was an American character actor who appeared in hundreds of films and television episodes. Because there were other actors named William Thompson he used his first and middle name when seeking acting roles. He was best known for playing Pete Wilkey in the television series '' Fury'' which ran from 1955 to 1960. Early life Fawcett's father was a Methodist minister, and after Fawcett attended Hamline University he became licensed to preach in 1916. During World War I, he joined the United States Army, serving as an ambulance driver. The French government honored him with the Legion of Honour for his care of the wounded. After his military service, Fawcett became a teacher of English and literature at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and, after earning a Ph.D. degree in Elizabethan drama from the University of Nebraska, he became a professor of theatre arts at Michigan State University. Griff Barnett (born Manley Griffith, November 12, 1884 – January 12, 1958) was an American actor.(17 January 1958) ''The New York Times'' Barnett was born in Blue Ridge, Texas in 1884. In the early 20th century, Barnett was a member of the Mack-Hillard stock theater company in Wichita, Kansas. He also worked with stock theater companies in the Chicago area. He played the role of the Rexall family druggist in commercials on ''The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show'' on radio in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He also appeared in numerous films from the 1930s through the 1950s, including '' To Each His Own'' (1946), '' Apartment for Peggy'' (1948), and '' Pinky'' (1949). Eleanor Phelps
Eleanor Phelps (September 8, 1907 – September 29, 2001) was an American theater, film, radio, and television actress. She appeared in 17 Broadway theater productions. Before going off to Vassar for college, Phelps attended Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore along with future actresses Margaret Barker and Mildred Natwick. In college she was a student of Hallie Flanagan at the Vassar Experimental Theatre and aspired to become a Broadway performer. Her father opposed her desire to appear on stage but her mom assisted her by introducing her to actor George Arliss. Parker Fennelly
Parker W. Fennelly (October 22, 1891 – January 22, 1988) was an American character actor who appeared in ten films, numerous television episodes and hundreds of radio programs. Early life The son of gardener Nathan Fennelly and Estelle Dolliver Fennelly, he was born and raised in Northeast Harbor, Maine, and studied classical acting in Boston, where he was a member of the Toy Theater company and participated in Chautauqua readings.
