Scarsdale is a small town in rural Victoria, Australia, and approximately 25 km south west of Ballarat. It is situated in the north-western part of Golden Plains Shire, on the bank of the Woady Yaloak River and is primarily an agricultural community. Scarsdale township includes a few community facilities including a primary school, a kindergarten, a general store, Town Hall, Post Office, the Scarsdale Community Park and The Scarsdale Hotel. The township is built along the Glenelg Highway, and the highway is the main route to Ballarat (the closet major city). The Scarsdale-Newtown Avenue Of Honour was established to commemorate WW1. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. Results from the 2016 census were available to the public on 11 April 2017, from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, two months earlier than for any previous census. Glenelg Highway
Glenelg Highway is a rural highway in south-eastern Australia, linking Mount Gambier with Ballarat. Most of the highway is located within the Western part of the state of Victoria, though a short, 15 km stretch from the South Australia/Victoria state border near Ardno to Glenburnie (6 km east of central Mount Gambier) is located in South Australia. Woady Yaloak River
The Woady Yaloak River is a perennial river of the Corangamite catchment, located in the Western District Lakes region of the Australian state of Victoria. Location and features The Woady Yaloak River rises below Black Hill, west of Ballarat and flows generally south joined by three minor tributaries through the towns of , and before reaching its river mouth and emptying into Lake Martin and then Lake Corangamite. From its highest point, the river descends over its meandering course. Golden Plains Shire
The Golden Plains Shire is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018, had a population of 23,120. It includes the towns of Bannockburn, Dereel, Gheringhap, Lethbridge, Linton, Berringa, Teesdale, Rokewood and Meredith. The Shire was formed on 6 May 1994 by the amalgamation of the Shire of Bannockburn (the part remaining after part of it was amalgamated with several other councils to form the new City of Greater Geelong in May 1993), Shire of Leigh, part of the Shire of Grenville and part of the Shire of Buninyong. Newtown is a locality situated on Pitfield Road ( Lismore - Scarsdale Road) in Golden Plains Shire, 144 km north-west of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. The Post Office opened on 12 November 1868 as Newtown-Scarsdale (to distinguish it from Newtown, now a suburb of Geelong). The office closed in 1957. The Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail follows the former railway line from Ballarat to Skipton, crossing the Woady Yaloak River on the nearby Nimmons Trestle Bridge, which is one of the largest timber trestle bridges in Victoria. The former recreation reserve, Newtown Cricket and Mustering Reserve, is currently unused. The surrounding grassland is classified as a biodiversity reserve by the Ballarat Environment Network. Linton, Victoria
Linton is a town in Victoria, Australia, off Glenelg Highway. Most of the town is located in Golden Plains Shire; however, a small section is in the Shire of Pyrenees. At the , Linton and the surrounding area had a population of 580. The Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary lies to the south-east of the township, near Springdallah Creek. History Linton was first settled about 1840 and was named after a pioneer family in an area. Gold was found in 1848 in what later became known as Linton's Diggings. Chinese people, among others, mined the local shafts until the gold ran out. The miners remained in the area and set up market gardens. The Post Office opened on 5 November 1857 as Linton's and was renamed Linton around 1860. Much mining equipment can still be found in the Linton district.
