Santiago López De Medrano
Santiago López de Medrano Sánchez (born October 15, 1942 in Mexico City) is a Mexican mathematician, who works as a researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His research has concerned knot theory, singularity theory, biomathematics, and differential topology. López de Medrano did his undergraduate studies at UNAM, and earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1969, under the supervision of William Browder. He returned to UNAM as a researcher and professor in 1968, and was president of the Mexican Mathematical Society from 1969 to 1973. López de Medrano presented his work on knot invariants at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1970. A fellow is a concept whose exact meaning depends on context. In learned or professional societies, it refers to a privileged member who is specially elected in recognition of their work and achievements. Knot Invariant
In the mathematical field of knot theory, a knot invariant is a quantity (in a broad sense) defined for each knot which is the same for equivalent knots. The equivalence is often given by ambient isotopy but can be given by homeomorphism. Some invariants are indeed numbers (algebraic), but invariants can range from the simple, such as a yes/no answer, to those as complex as a homology theory (for example, "a ''knot invariant'' is a rule that assigns to any knot a quantity such that if and are equivalent then .").
