Santi Leonardo e Erasmo is a Baroque architecture, Baroque-style, Roman Catholic church located in Roccagorga, province of Latina, region of Lazio, central Italy. Presumbably, the church is dedicated in part to St Erasmus of Formia, Erasmus, former bishop of Formia, a port in the province of Latina. It overlooks the Roccagorga Massacre, Piazza VI Gennaio History A church dedicated to ''Santa Maria'' present at this site, when in 1500, a building of this general layout was built. The ancient church of Santa Maria was replaced by the present sacristy. It underwent refurbishment in a Baroque style between 1671 and 1700. The present late-Baroque structure was built after church was damaged during an earthquake in 1753, and collapsed on 23 December, 1769; the architect Paolo Posi designed the layout completed in 1775. Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. Paolo Posi
Paolo Posi (1708 - 1776) was an Italian architect of the late-Baroque period. Among the cities in which he was active were Rome, Narni, and Viterbo. Among the other works, he designed mausoleums for Cardinal Inico Caracciolo in Aversa, Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali in the church of Sant'Agostino in Rome, for cardinal Carafa in Sant'Andrea delle Fratte (1759), and for princess Maria Flaminia Chigi-Odescalchi (1771) in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo. Works Posi was born in Siena. In 1734-1742 he helped in the restoration of the Cathedral of Naples. From 1751 onwards he was the family architect of the Colonna family. Domenico Orsini d'Aragona (Naples, 5 June 1719 – Rome, 10 January 1789) was an Italian, Roman Catholic Cardinal. Biography He was born to Ferdinando Bernualdo Filippo Orsini, the 14th Duke of Gravina, and his second wife, Giacinta Marescotti-Ruspoli. Domenico was the grand-nephew of Pierfrancesco Orsini, who in 1724 became Pope Benedict XIII. In 1734, Domenico succeeded his father as the 15th Duke of Gravina. Also that year, he was named by King Charles VII of Naples to be ambassador to the Vatican. In 1738, he wed the princess Anna Paola Flaminia of the Ducal family of Odescalchi-Erba di Bracciano, and with her had four children: Maria Maddalena, Giacinta, Filippo e Amedeo (Filippo Bernualdo).
