Santi-Veena (1954 Film)
''Santi-Vina'' is a 1954 Thai Bildungsroman film. It was produced by Ratana Pestonji and Robert G. North, with American sponsorship, and won major awards at the Asia Pacific Film Festival in Tokyo. Widely regarded as a classic, it was the first Thai film to be shot in the 35-mm format, but was considered lost until its rediscovery in 2014 and subsequent restoration. Plot The story revolves around a poor blind child named Santi, and his friend Vina, who protects him from neighborhood bullies, led by Krai. Santi's father send him away to reside with a Buddhist monastery, but Vina remains with him. Later on in adulthood, the two become a couple. They must fend off the forceful advances of Krai, who wishes to wed Vina, and has won the endorsement of her parents. Ratana Pestonji
Rattana Pestonji ( th, รัตน์ เปสตันยี; ) was a Thai film director, producer, screenwriter and cinematographer and is regarded as the father of contemporary Thai film. Although his filmography was brief, his films placed Thai cinema on the world stage. He also pushed for innovations, and was one of the first Thai directors to use 35-mm film. He died just as he was giving a speech to government officials to call for support of a domestic industry he saw as coming under threat from Hollywood films. China Film Archive
The China Film Archive (CFA) is a Chinese film archive located in Beijing that is owned and operated by the Central Propaganda Department of the Chinese Communist Party. It was founded to preserve existing Chinese films and restore ‘lost’ films. In recent years it has collaborated with international film bodies to assist in film preservation and has organised numerous events, most notably the Beijing International Film Festival. Aim The intention of the Archive upon its foundation was for preserving Chinese films and screening them in rural areas. In 2012, approximately 2,400 Chinese-produced films between 1905 and 1976 were stored in the archive. Overtime, the Archive has extended its services towards digitally restoring both Chinese and international films. The National Film Heritage Registry of Thailand is a collection of historically and culturally significant films compiled and maintained by the Thai Film Archive for their recognition and preservation. The Scala Cinema ( th, โรงภาพยนตร์สกาล่า) was a thousand-seat movie theater in Bangkok, Thailand, named after the Teatro alla Scala, Milan's opera house. Scala opened on 31 December 1969 with a screening of '' The Undefeated'' (1969), a US Western starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson. It closed on 5 July 2020, showing, as its last film, ''Cinema Paradiso''. The 69th Cannes Film Festival was held from 11 to 22 May 2016. Australian director George Miller was the President of the Jury for the main competition. French actor Laurent Lafitte was the host for the opening and closing ceremonies. On 15 March it was announced that Japanese director Naomi Kawase would serve as the Cinéfondation and Short Film Jury president. Rak Panyarachun
Rak Panyarachun ( th, รักษ ปันยารชุน; 3 June 1914 – 21 January 2007) was a Thai army officer, businessman and politician. He was a son-in-law of Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram (Phibun), and served as deputy minister of foreign affairs in Phibun's government from 1955 to 1957. He was also a brother of future prime minister Anand Panyarachun. Rak graduated Doctor of Law from France and joined the Royal Thai Army in the Judge Advocate General's Department, reaching the rank of major.
