Sante Carollo (Montecchio Precalcino, 8 February 1924 – Thiene, 9 January 2004) was an Italian road cyclist. His main occupation being a bricklayer, he became famous to the public for being the Maglia nera The Maglia Nera was a black cycling jersey, jersey awarded as a symbolic prize in cycling competition at the Giro d'Italia, given to the last man to finish the race. Maglia Nera
The Maglia Nera was a black cycling jersey, jersey awarded as a symbolic prize in cycling competition at the Giro d'Italia, given to the last man to finish the race. It was allocated between 1946 and 1951. The competition for the jersey came from the time Italian soccer star Giuseppe Ticozzelli who competed in the 1926 Giro d'Italia as an independent while wearing his black jersey of the football team he played for (Casale). He completed three stages and would often take rest breaks for food, he had to drop out of the race after being run over by a car. There was real competition to win this particular jersey. Especially noted are the struggles between Sante Carollo and Luigi Malabrocca, to see who could waste the most time. Luigi Malabrocca
Luigi Malabrocca (22 June 1920 – 1 October 2006) was an Italian road cyclist. He formed a rivalry with Sante Carollo for the Maglia nera at the Giro d'Italia. He 'won' the rivalry, earning the jersey twice to Carollo's once. While noted for his rivalry, he was also an accomplished cyclist. He won the Italian National Cyclo-cross Championships in 1951 and 1953, as well as winning the 1947 Paris-Nantes, the 1948 Coppa Ugo Agostoni and the 1949 Tour of Yugoslavia.
