Santa Catarina, Curaçao
Oostpunt (also Land van Maal) is a geozone (''region'') on the island of Curaçao. It is located on the easternmost point of the island. Since the 1870s, the area is private property of the Maal family, and most of the area is off-limits with the exception of the villages of Oostpunt, Sint Joris, and Santa Catharina. The geozone of Oostpunt covers about 10 percent of the island. History Plantation Klein Sint Joris (also ''San Juan'') was founded in 1662 by Matthias Beck and is one of the oldest plantations on Curaçao. Around 1840, Oostpunt was inhabited by 150 to 200 people, most of whom were slaves. The Maal family, army officers from the Netherlands, arrived in Curaçao in the late 18th century and had acquired five plantations by the 1870s. The plantations were used for agriculture, livestock, and mining, however, the vast majority of land is pristine wilderness. A national park is a nature park, natural park in use for conservation (ethic), conservation purposes, created and protected by national governments. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. The International Coral Reef Society (ICRS; previously the International Society for Reef Studies) is an international, not-for profit, scientific society dedicated to the conservation of coral reefs through science and understanding. Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity Foundation (previously The Caribbean Marine Biological Institute; commonly referred to as CARMABI Foundation or just CARMABI) is a research organization in Curaçao, former Netherlands Antilles. It is situated in Piscadera Bay, from the Caribbean Sea. Its education and research programs include the ecological aspects of fisheries and coral reef sciences. The Parliament of Curaçao ( pap, Parlamento di Kòrsou, nl, Staten van Curaçao) consist of 21 members, each elected for a four-year term in a general election. Curaçao president of parliament is Charetti America-Francisca. The first Parliament was installed on 10 October 2010, following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, and consisted of the members of the island council elected on 27 August 2010. The first Speaker of the Parliament was Ivar Asjes (Pueblo Soberano), while Amerigo Thodé ( Movementu Futuro Korsou) was the Deputy Speaker. Coral Reef
A coral reef is an underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals. Reefs are formed of colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, whose polyps cluster in groups. Coral belongs to the class Anthozoa in the animal phylum Cnidaria, which includes sea anemones and jellyfish. Unlike sea anemones, corals secrete hard carbonate exoskeletons that support and protect the coral. Most reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated water. Coral reefs first appeared 485 million years ago, at the dawn of the Early Ordovician, displacing the microbial and sponge reefs of the Cambrian.
