''Dracaena angolensis'', synonym ''Sansevieria cylindrica'', also known as the cylindrical snake plant, African spear or spear sansevieria or in Brazil Saint Bárbara sword, is a succulent plant native to Angola. Formerly in the genus ''Sansevieria'', it is now included in '' Dracaena''. Description ''Dracaena angolensis'' has striped, elongate, smooth, greenish-gray subcylindrical leaves. They are up to diameter and grow up to above soil. The spear sansevieria grows fan-shaped, with its stiff leaves growing from a basal rosette. The species is interesting in having subcylindrical instead of strap-shaped leaves caused by a failure to express genes which would cause the cylindrical bud to differentiate dorsoventrally or produce a distinctive and familiar top and bottom surface to the leaf blade. Friedrich Martin Josef Welwitsch (25 February 1806 – 20 October 1872) was an Austrian explorer and botanist who in Angola was the first European to describe the plant ''Welwitschia mirabilis''. Wenceslas Bojer (also Václav Bojer in Czech or Wenzel Bojer in German) (23 September 1795 in Řesanice, Bohemia, now the Czech Republic – 4 June 1856 in Port Louis, Mauritius) was a Czech naturalist, botanist and botanical illustrator. Life he was born to Simon Bojer and Barbara Staub. Career From 1813 till 1820 Bojer worked at the Imperial Museum Vienna. As a young man he was sent on expeditions to Africa and Mauritius by Franz Sieber. In 1821 he arrived at Mauritius. In 1822 the Mauritian governor Robert Townsend Farquhar sent him to Madagascar.
