Sandwell Local Elections
Sandwell Borough Council elections are held three years out of every four, with a third of the council elected each time. Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council is the local authority for the metropolitan borough of Sandwell in the West Midlands (county), West Midlands, England. Since the last boundary changes in 2004, 72 councillors have been elected from 24 Wards of the United Kingdom, wards. Political control The first elections to the council were held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority until coming into its powers on 1 April 1974. Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council was created in 1974 to administer the newly formed Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, in the West Midlands county of England. The council offices are located at the Council House, Freeth Street, Oldbury town centre, which opened in 1989. Sandwell is divided into 24 Wards and is represented by 72 ward councillors. Elections to the council take place in three out of every four years, with one-third of the seats being contested at each election. Since the Local Government Act 1985, Sandwell Council has effectively been a unitary authority, serving as the sole executive, deliberative, and legislative body responsible for local policy, setting council tax, and allocating budget in the district; although public transport, fire and police services, and the local government pension fund (West Midlands Pension Fund) are jointly run by the seven metropolitan boroughs of the West Midlands county. The 2007 Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2007 to elect members of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council in the West Midlands, England. 2022 Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council Election
The 2022 Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council election is currently taking place as of 5 May 2022 to elect members of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. This is on the same day as other local elections. 24 of the 72 seats will be up for election. Background Sandwell is a consistently Labour council. Labour have held majorities every election since its creation in 1973, apart from 1978 when the Conservatives gained the council. From 2018 to 2021, Sandwell was one of the few councils to be comprised fully of 1 party, with Labour in control of all 72 wards. In the 2021 election, Labour lost 9 seats with 53.1% of the vote, the Conservatives gained 9 with 36.6%, and independents did not make any gains or losses with 4.6% of the vote.
