Sandoyartunnilin
Sandoyartunnilin (Sandoy Tunnel) is an undersea road tunnel under construction in the Faroe Islands. It will connect the main island of Streymoy with Sandoy to the south. The length of the tunnel will be 10.8 kilometres. The estimated cost is 860 million DKK. The tunnel is expected to be ready for traffic in late 2023, after which the ferry '' Teistin'' will cease its route between Gamlarætt on Streymoy and Skopun on Sandoy. The tunnel crosses the Skopunarfjørður and runs from Gamlarætt to Traðardalur in central Sandoy, near the Inni í Dal stadium. Eysturoyartunnilin
The Eysturoyartunnilin (in English the Eysturoy Tunnel, earlier known as the Skálafjarðartunnilin) is a large undersea road tunnel under the Tangafjørður sound in the Faroe Islands, connecting the island of Streymoy to the island of Eysturoy. It also crosses the southern part of Skálafjørður, and connects the towns of Runavík on the eastern side and Strendur on the western side of the fjord, and includes the world's first undersea roundabout in the middle of the network. It is the largest ever infrastructure project in the Faroe Islands. Altogether, the three-branch sub-sea tunnel measures long, including the roundabout. The Suðuroyartunnilin (Suðuroy Tunnel) is a proposed submerged fixed-link in the Faroe Islands, linking the island of Suðuroy to Sandoy. Currently all vehicles and cargo, and virtually all passenger traffic must use the ferry service. Current situation At present, a ferry service operates between Krambatangi on central Suðuroy and the capital Tórshavn. The ferry is operated by the national transport company Strandfaraskip Landsins and uses the vessels ''Smyril'' (passengers and cargo) and ''Herhjólfur III'' (cargo), taking two hours and five minutes (''Smyril'') to three hours (''Herhjólfur III'') each way. Skopunarfjørður
Skopunarfjørður is a strait separating Sandoy and Streymoy in the Faroe Islands. The strait also passes the isle of Hestur. Geography The strait runs between (an islet off northern Sandoy) and the south cape of Hestur in the west and Kirkjubønes on Streymoy in the east, over a length of circa . It is wide at its narrowest point between Sandoy and Streymoy, and between Skopun and Hestur. It is circa deep in the middle reaches of the strait. The fjord is bordered by the Tórshavn, Skopun, Sandur and Skálavík municipalities. Strandfaraskip Landsins is the government agency for public transport in the Faroe Islands. It is owned by the Faroese national government under the Ministry of Finance (''Fíggjamálaráðið'') and runs eight ferry routes and a number of bus routes. History Strandfaraskip Landsins was established in 1917 when the government took over the ferry ''Smiril'' from the brothers Petur og Niels Juel Mortensen from Suðuroy. Gamlarætt
Gamlarætt is a ferry port in the Faroe Islands. It is situated on the southwestern side of the island of Streymoy, the largest island in the Faroes, between the villages of Velbastaður and Kirkjubøur. It accommodates ferry services to the islands of Sandoy and Hestur. The port is also used for local salmon farms. History Until 1993 all ferry traffic to Sandoy operated from Tórshavn, on a northern route across Skopunarfjørður to Skopun and Hestur, and a southern route via Skúvoyarfjørður to Skálavík, Skúvoy and Sandur. This resulted in crossing times of 1–2 hours for non-stop trips to 2–3 hours with other calls en route from Tórshavn. Velbastaður
Velbastaður ( da, Velbestad) is a village on the island of Streymoy in the Faroe Islands. It is a part of Tórshavn Municipality and is considered among the oldest settlements in the islands. There are two schools and one kindergarten in the village, with children coming from the neighboring village of Kirkjubø as well the capital at Tórshavn. Sandoy ("Sand Island") is the first of the five southern islands that make up the Faroe chain, the fifth biggest of all the Faroe Islands, an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark. Streymoy ( da, Strømø) is the largest and most populated island of the Faroe Islands. The capital, Tórshavn, is located on its southeast coast. The name means "island of currents".
