Sandis Smons
Sandis Smons (born 19 May 1999) is a Latvian professional ice hockey defenceman who is currently playing with HC La Chaux-de-Fonds of the Swiss League (SL) as a prospect to Genève-Servette HC of the National League (ice hockey), National League (NL). He plays in Switzerland with a Swiss player-license. Playing career Smons made his professional debut with the HCB Ticino Rockets, Ticino Rockets of the Swiss League (SL) during the 2018–19 season, appearing in 2 games this season. On 18 August 2019, Smons signed his first professional contract with Genève-Servette HC for the 2019/20 season. He was immediately loaned to HC Sierre of the SL to begin the 2019–20 season and was called up on September 23, 2019 by Genève-Servette to replace injured Henrik Tömmernes. Latvia Men's National Ice Hockey Team
The Latvian men's national ice hockey team represents Latvia in international ice hockey. The team is ranked 10th in the world by IIHF as of 2019. The team is controlled by the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation. Their best ever finish at the World Championships was 7th place in 1997, 2004 and 2009. At the 2018 World Championship the team finished 8th. Latvia reached the quarterfinals at the 2014 Winter Olympics, losing 2–1 to Canada. Joakim Henrik Tömmernes (born 28 August 1990) is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman who currently plays for Frölunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). He was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh round, 210th overall, of the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Tömmernes played four seasons with Frölunda HC in the Elitserien before moving to North America to join the Canucks minor league affiliate in Utica. Known for his leadership skills, he has served as captain or alternate captain for several teams during his playing career, including captaining his country in 2021.
