Sandimen, Pingtung
Sandimen Township is a mountain indigenous township in Pingtung County, Taiwan Province, Republic of China. The population of the township consists mainly of the Paiwan people with a substantial Rukai minority. Names Ethnic Chinese settlers adapted the original Paiwan name into Hokkien (; or ). Under Japanese rule the name was . Following the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, the area became Sandimeng Township () but the name was changed again in 1947 to Sandi Township () but the Taiwanese pronunciation of ''Soaⁿ-tē-mn̂g'' continued to be commonly used. In August 1992, the township assumed its current name. Township (Taiwan)
Townships are the third-level administrative subdivisions of counties of the Republic of China (Taiwan), along with county-administered cities. After World War II, the townships were established from the following conversions on the Japanese administrative divisions: Although local laws do not enforce strict standards for classifying them, generally urban townships have a larger population and more business and industry than rural townships, but not to the extent of county-administered cities. Under townships, there is still the village as the fourth or basic level of administration. Taiwan Under Japanese Rule
The island of Taiwan, together with the Penghu Islands, became a dependency of Japan in 1895, when the Qing dynasty ceded Fujian-Taiwan Province in the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the Japanese victory in the First Sino-Japanese War. The short-lived Republic of Formosa resistance movement was suppressed by Japanese troops and quickly defeated in the Capitulation of Tainan, ending organized resistance to Japanese occupation and inaugurating five decades of Japanese rule over Taiwan. Maolin National Scenic Area
The Maolin National Scenic Area () is a national scenic area in Kaohsiung and Pingtung County of Taiwan. Geology The scenic area is located at the western side of Central Mountain Range foothill which covers three rivers. It is located within the boundary of Sandimen Township of Pingtung County and Maolin and Liouguei districts of Kaohsiung City. The average temperature of the area is 24 °C. Guchuan Bridge
The Guchuan Bridge () is a bridge connecting Sandimen, Sandimen Township and Wutai, Pingtung, Wutai Township in Pingtung County, Taiwan. At the height of 99 meters, it is the tallest bridge pier in Taiwan. History The bridge was opened for traffic on 5 October 2013 after four years of construction with a total cost of NT$700 million. The bridge was built to replace the original bridge named Wutai No. 1 Bridge which was destroyed by Typhoon Morakot in August 2009. Technical specification The bridge has a length of 654 meters and width of 10 meters, and is made of concrete and steel. It crosses over the North Ailiao River. To avoid damage by flash flood along the river during typhoon season, there is only one pier built in the path of continuous river flow. Kaohsiung County
Kaohsiung County was a county in southern Taiwan between 1945 and 2010. The county seat was located in Fongshan City. History Kaohsiung County was established on 6 December 1945 on the territory of Takao Prefecture () shortly after the end of World War II. In the early years, Kaohsiung County consists of most territory of Takao Prefecture except the territory near cities of Takao (Kaohsiung) and Heitō ( Pingtung). Pingtung County is a county located in southern Taiwan. It has a warm tropical monsoon climate and is known for its agriculture and tourism.
