The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. Casuarina is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1974 and was named after the adjacent suburb of Casuarina. Casuarina is an entirely urban electorate, covering only 12 km2 and taking in the suburbs of Brinkin, Nakara, Tiwi and part of Alawa, as well as the Charles Darwin University. Wulagi, Northern Territory
Wulagi is a Northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History Wulagi is one of Darwin's northern suburbs east of Lee Point Road and was built after Cyclone Tracy struck Darwin, Northern Territory in 1974. The name originates from an Aboriginal tribe on the Blyth and Cadell Rivers in Central Arnhem Land. Development of the area was primarily during the 1970s and 1980s. Like the neighbouring suburb of Anula, Wulagi is largely built on a plateau with a downhill slope on its east side. The suburb was designed as a low-density, low-traffic suburb with pedestrian access facilitated by a number of laneways and a 'green-belt' that runs from Wulagi Primary School and the central shopping area westwards. Leanyer, Northern Territory
Leanyer is a northern suburb of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History The name Leanyer was in general use for the area at the time of development and first appeared on 1869 survey plans. Leanyer is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word. During World War II Leanyer was established as a military area, there was an Army post and a military equipment storage facility, gun turrets were also set up along the coast of Lee Point. It was disbanded soon after the end of World War II and residential development of Leanyer started during the 1970s. The roads and streets within the suburb are named after coastal features and rivers in the northern part of the Northern Territory. Malak is a Northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History Malak is named after the Aboriginal tribe who came from the Daly River area. Alternative spellings have been ''Mallak'', ''Mulluck Mulluck''. The naming intended in 1965 to have the tribe pronounced ''Mulluck''. The suburb of Malak was under construction when Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin in late 1974. Shoal Bay is a shallow bay lying adjacent to, and north of, the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. Encompassing Hope Inlet at its eastern end, it is characterised by extensive areas of intertidal mudflats and mangroves and is an important site for waders, or shorebirds. The bay is situated within the Shoal Bay Coastal Reserve, a protected area that was established in 2000. Shoal Bay is also known for accommodating the Shoal Bay Receiving Station, a signals-intelligence collection facility that contributes to the NSA's global data collection program. The History of the Northern Territory began over 60,000 years ago when Indigenous Australians settled the region. Makassan traders began trading with the indigenous people of the Northern Territory for trepang from at least the 18th century onward and possibly 300 years prior to that. Europeans first sighted the coast of the future Territory in the 17th century. British groups made attempts to settle the coastal regions of the Territory from 1824 onwards, but no settlement proved successful until the establishment of Port Darwin in 1869.
