San Giovanni Nuovo, Venice
San Giovanni Nuovo (also known as ''San Zan Novo'' or ''San Zaninovo'') is a Roman Catholic church in the campo of the same name, in the sestiere of Castello. History A church at the site was present by the 10th century, but the façade, which remains mostly incomplete, was rebuilt in 1762 using designs by Matteo Lucchesi. The interior has a nave defined by corinthian columns. There are two lateral chapels. Castello, Venice
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri of Venice, Italy. History There had been, since at least the 8th-century, small settlements of the islands of San Pietro di Castello (for which the sestiere is named). This island was also called Isola d'Olivolo. From the thirteenth century onward, the district grew around a naval dockyard on what was originally the Isole Gemini. The land in the district was dominated by the ''Arsenale'' of the Republic of Venice, then the largest naval complex in Europe. Matteo Lucchesi
Matteo Lucchesi (1705–1776) was an Italian architect and Engineer, active mainly in his native Venice. He learned mathematics and architecture from Tommaso Temanza. He was named by the Ducal Republic to be ''Magistrato delle Acque'' (Magistrate of Waterworks), an important post in the state. He designed the reconstruction of the church of San Giovanni Nuovo (''San Zaninovo''), built 1751–1762. He boasted that this church was the ''Redentore redento'' (redeemed Redeemer) because it corrected the errors Lucchesi found in Palladio's church of ''Il Redentore''. San Zaninovo's facade was never completed. Lucchesi also helped in reconstruction at the Ospedaletto. He also published works about artistic methods. Francesco Maggiotto
Francesco Fedeli, nicknamed Francesco Maggiotto or also il Maggiotto (1738 – 13 September 1805) was an Italian painter from Venice. Life Francesco Maggiotto was the son of Domenico Fedeli, with whom he shared the nickname "Maggiotto"; in the early years he was trained in the same style as his father's. At first, he was also influenced, among others, by Piazzetta, Pittoni, Tiepolo and Zuccarelli, drawing inspiration from contemporary painting styles. The painting ''La Pittura e la Natura'' (1769) was painted in this early period, and Maggiotto offered it to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia; today it is still stored in the Gallerie dell'Accademia . He also imitated Pietro Longhi's style but with less irony and greater moralism. Fabio Canal
Fabio Canal or Canale (1703 – 5 September 1767) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque era, active mainly depicting history and sacred subjects in his native Venice. Biography He was a follower of Tiepolo. Among his works are the nave ceiling fresco (1744), depicting ''Communion of the Apostles and the Triumph of the Eucharist'' in the church of Santi Apostoli, Venice with quadrature by Pietro Gaspari; and paintings in the churches of San Giovanni Nuovo and San Martino, Venice.
