Martone ( Calabrian: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Reggio Calabria, Calabria, in southern Italy. Its origins date back to between the 7th and 8th centuries. The founders were Greek monks from the Byzantine Orient who made a deep impression on the social-economic fabric of the region. The monks travelled from Cappadocia, Syria, Palestine, Libya, Egypt, and Greece proper, chased by Syrian persecution, to find refuge in Sicily and Calabria.
