San Francisco, Old San Juan
San Francisco, within Old San Juan, is one of the 7 subbarrios of San Juan Antiguo barrio in the municipality of San Juan in Puerto Rico. A historic church, the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, is located in San Francisco. History Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of San Francisco was 1,177. In 2010, the population of San Francisco was 796. Saint Francis of Assisi Church (Church of Saint Francis of Assisi) is located on San Francisco Street. This historic church gives its name to the subdistrict. Insular Area
In the law of the United States, an insular area is a U.S.-associated jurisdiction that is not part of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. This includes fourteen U.S. territories administered under U.S. sovereignty, as well as three sovereign states each with a Compact of Free Association with the United States. The term also may be used to refer to the previous status of the Philippine Islands and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands when it existed. In Puerto Rico, there are 78 municipalities and 902 municipio subdivisions made up of 827 barrios and 75 barrios-pueblo. There are also a number of subbarrios and communities. The following is a list of the 902 barrios, some of the subbarrios, including the 40 subbarrios of Santurce, which is a barrio of San Juan and a few communities (, on the U.S. Census) arranged in alphabetical order. Francisco Oller
Francisco Oller (June 17, 1833 – May 17, 1917) was a Puerto Rican painter. Oller is the only Latin American painter to have played a role in the development of Impressionism. One of the most distinguished transatlantic painters of his day, Oller helped transform painting in the Caribbean. Biography Early years Oller (birth name: Francisco Manuel Oller y Cestero ) was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, the third of four children of aristocratic and wealthy Spanish parents Cayetano Juan Oller y Fromesta and María del Carmen Cestero Dávila. When he was eleven he began to study art under the tutelage of Juan Cleto Noa, a painter who had an art academy in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
