San Felipe Municipality, Yucatán
San Felipe Municipality is one of the Municipalities of Yucatán, 106 municipalities in the Mexico, Mexican state of Yucatán. Its municipal seat is located in the port town of San Felipe and is located on the north coast of the state, on the Gulf of Mexico. The port is primarily a fishing port, which in recent times has begun significant tourist activity. Location The port town of San Felipe is located 11 kilometers west of Rio Lagartos and at the entrance of the estuary of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, world-famous for the concentrations of pink American flamingo, flamingoes. The San Felipe estuary runs parallel to the Gulf Coast to the port of El Cuyo. At its origin, most of the houses in San Felipe was built in cedar varnished so it could resist damage from moisture and salt from the coast, however a number of these buildings were destroyed by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Dzidzantún is a town in Mexico in the northeastern Yucatan, which serves as the headquarters of the municipio or administrative unit of the Dzidzantún Municipality. Geography This town is in the coastal region known as the northern Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Gilbert
Hurricane Gilbert was the second most intense tropical cyclone on record in the Atlantic basin in terms of barometric pressure, only behind Hurricane Wilma in 2005. American Flamingo
The American flamingo (''Phoenicopterus ruber'') is a large species of flamingo closely related to the greater flamingo and Chilean flamingo native to the Neotropics. It was formerly considered conspecific with the greater flamingo, but that treatment is now widely viewed (e.g. by the American and British Ornithologists' Unions) as incorrect due to a lack of evidence. Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve
Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve ( es, Reserva de la Biósfera Ría Lagartos) (established 2004) is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. The reserve is located at the eastern end of the coastal strip of the Yucatán Peninsula, with the Gulf of Mexico at its northern limit. The area encompasses coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico and includes important wetlands designated under the Ramsar Wetlands Convention.
