Dzidzantún is a town in Mexico in the northeastern Yucatan, which serves as the headquarters of the municipio or administrative unit of the Dzidzantún Municipality. Geography This town is in the coastal region known as the northern Gulf of Mexico. It falls within the parallel 21° 12' and 21° 23' latitude north and between 88° 57' and 89° 04' west longitude and has an average height of 4 meters. It is bounded on the north by the Gulf of Mexico, south to the cities of Temax and Cansahcab, east to the town of Dzilam Gonzalez and to the west of the town of Yobaín. Climate Demographics As of 2020, there were 8,345 people residing in the town. Of the total population, 50.5% (4,211) were male and 49.5% (4,134) were female. The largest age ranges were 15 to 19 years old (676 inhabitants; 8.1%), 45 to 49 years old (627 inhabitants; 7.5%), and 20 to 24 years old (621 inhabitants; 7.4%). Dzidzantún Municipality (In the Yucatec Maya language, Yucatec Maya Language: “what is written in stone”) is a Municipalities of Yucatán, municipality in the Mexico, Mexican List of states of Mexico, state of Yucatán containing of land and located roughly northeast of the city of Mérida, Yucatán, Mérida. History Before the arrival of the Spanish, the area belonged to the chieftainship of Ah Kin Chel. After the Spanish conquest of Yucatán, conquest the area became part of the encomienda system. The encomienda was established in 1549 for Hernán Muñoz Vaquiano. Yucatán declared its independence from the Spanish Crown in 1821 and in 1825, the area was assigned to the Temax Municipality. In 1918 it was designated as its own municipality. During the 17th century there were many pirates who attacked the Spanish colonies, and many towns in the Yucatán peninsula were raided which included Dzidzantún.
