San Diego Mariners (PHL) Players
The San Diego Mariners were an ice hockey team based in San Diego that played in the World Hockey Association from 1974 to 1977 at the San Diego Sports Arena. Previous to being in San Diego, the team was known as the New York Raiders, New York Golden Blades, and Jersey Knights. After folding in 1977, San Diego Mariners' name was adopted by an unrelated franchise in the low-level, minor professional Pacific Hockey League (PHL). Notable alumni Star players for the Mariners included defenseman Harry Howell, center Andre Lacroix, and goaltender Ernie Wakely. The Mariners were coached by Howell (as player-coach) during their first season and Ron Ingram the succeeding two seasons, qualifying for the WHA playoffs each year. Don Edwards (ice Hockey)
Donald Laurie Edwards (born September 28, 1955) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender who played ten seasons in the National Hockey League for the Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Playing career Edwards started his hockey career in the juniors with the Kitchener Rangers in the OHA-Jr. He was very successful, playing in 90 games over 2 seasons, but was not considered a high draft pick, because of his small size. Despite that, he was still picked 89th overall in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. In his first NHL season, Edwards played in 25 games after spending last season in the AHL with the Hershey Bears. He finished the season with 16 wins, 7 losses and a 2.51 GAA. Ron Plumb
Ronald William Plumb (born July 17, 1950) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. Ron is the brother of Robert Plumb. Playing career Plumb was born in Kingston, Ontario. A Peterborough Petes junior player who won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league's best defenceman in 1970, Plumb was drafted ninth overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. After two seasons with their Central Hockey League farm club Oklahoma City Blazers, the Bruins protected him in the June, 1972 expansion draft. But with little chance to play with the veteran-laden NHL team, he jumped to the unproven World Hockey Association Philadelphia Blazers only weeks later.
