San Cristóbal FC was a football team based in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. It played until 2014 in the defunct Primera División de Republica Dominicana. The team disappeared in 2014 following the professionalization of the Dominican football. A new club was created in Sán Cristóbal that year, called Atlético San Cristóbal that from 2015 competes in the Liga Dominicana de Fútbol. San Cristóbal is a city in the southern region of Dominican Republic. It is the municipal (''municipio'') capital of the San Cristóbal province. The municipality is located in a valley at the foothills of the mountains belonging to the Cordillera Central, between the Nigua and Nizao rivers. Within this municipality there is one municipal district (''distrito municipal''): Hato Damas. San Cristóbal was founded in the late 16th century. The Constitution of the Dominican Republic was signed in San Cristóbal in 1844. Primera División de Republica Dominicana was the former top division of the Federación Dominicana de Fútbol. Established in 1970, since 2002 this competition serves as second level to the Liga Mayor (see below). The Liga Dominicana de Fútbol is the first professional football league in Dominican Republic, it was launched in March 2015. For sponsorship reasons it is known as ''LDF Banco Popular''. History Prior to the league's establishment, football in the Dominican Republic is only played in amateur level, partly due to football not being the top sport among Dominicans, who are more inclined to baseball and basketball. To address the issue and to raise the status of football in the country, the Dominican Football Federation has decided to implement the idea of a new professional league in the country, to attract more people into the sport.
