San Bernardino Da Siena, Carpi
San Bernardino da Siena and the adjacent Capuchin order Monastery are a Roman Catholic, Baroque style church and convent respectively, located on Via Trento Trieste 20 in central Carpi, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. San Bernardino da Siena is the patron saint of Carpi. History The church was built in 1604 under the auspices of a confraternity, and was adorned with masterworks such as canvases by Marco Meloni, Ludovico Carracci, and Guercino, all of which are now substituted by copies, the originals in the Galleria Estense. However the original 18th-century altar with a reliquary bust (1857) of the title saint (by Giovanni Belleza), and smaller altarpieces remain including a ''Martyrdom of St Lawrence'' by Jacopo Palma il Giovane, a ''San Carlo Borromeo'' by Carlo Procaccini, and a canvas by Stefano Lemmi. Galleria Estense
The Galleria Estense is an art gallery in the heart of Modena, centred around the collection of the d’Este family: rulers of Modena, Ferrara and Reggio from 1289 to 1796. Located on the top floor of the ''Palazzo dei Musei'', on the St. Augustine square, the museum showcases a vast array of works ranging from fresco and oil painting to marble, polychrome and terracotta sculpture; musical instruments; numismatics; curios and decorative antiques. It was publicly established in 1854 by the last duke Francesco V of Austria-Este, and was relocated in 1894 to its current situation from the Palazzo Ducale. Since 2014, the Gallery has formed a part the Gallerie Estensi, an independent complex of museums merging the Estense University library, and the Lapidary Museum in Modena, the Palazzo Ducale in Sassuolo and the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Ferrara. 2012 Northern Italy Earthquakes
In May 2012, two major earthquakes struck Northern Italy, causing 27 deaths and widespread damage. The events are known in Italy as the 2012 Emilia earthquakes, because they mainly affected the Emilia region. The first earthquake, registering magnitude 6.1, struck in the Emilia-Romagna region, about north of the city of Bologna, on at 04:03 local time (02:03 UTC). The epicentre was between Finale Emilia, Bondeno and Sermide. Two aftershocks of magnitude 5.2 occurred, one approximately an hour after the main event and another approximately eleven hours after the main event. Seven people were killed. A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the same area nine days later, on 29 May, causing an additional twenty deaths and widespread damage, particularly to buildings already weakened by the 20 May earthquake. Stefano Lemmi (Active 17th-century) was born near Silano in the Lunigiana and was a pupil or follower of Guido Reni in Bologna, but painted mainly in the areas near Carrara.
