Samuel Gargan
Samuel Gargan (born ) is a former long serving politician and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Gargan was first elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1983 Northwest Territories general election. He was re-elected to a second term in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election. He would be returned by acclamation to a third term in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. He would be elected Speaker by members of the Legislature on February 15, 1995. He ran for re-election to what would be his final term in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. Redknife River
The Redknife River is a river in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It is a major tributary of the Mackenzie River. The Redknife Formation, a stratigraphical unit of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin was named for the river. Course The Redknife river originates in the ''Redknife Hills'', at an elevation of . It flows east down the slopes of the hill, then turns north, draws water from a lake system, then turns north-east. It is crossed by the Mackenzie Highway, then turns north and flows into the Mackenzie River at an elevation of , downstream from Fort Providence and upstream from Jean Marie River. 1999 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1999 Northwest Territories general election was held on December 6, 1999. This was the first election under the new boundaries that were created when Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. 19 members were elected, five fewer than in the previous election. The main issues in this election were Native self-government and control over the territory's resources. On polling day, Yellowknife was caught in an extreme blizzard that cut off-road traffic and supplies. This was also the last election in Canada in the 20th century. The election was conducted under a non-partisan rules as the government operates under consensus, and Elections N.W.T. has not recognized parties since 1905.
