Samuel Dexter LeCompte
Samuel Dexter LeCompte was born in Dorchester County, Maryland, USA, on December 13, 1814. He was a lawyer and judge in Kansas. He graduated from Jefferson College (now Washington & Jefferson College) in 1834. He was married in 1841 to Camilla Anderson. They had five children. He was chief justice of the Supreme Court of the Kansas Territory from 1854 to 1859. He served in the Kansas Legislature from 1867 to 1868. LeCompte died in Kansas City, Missouri, on April 24, 1888. Kansas
Kansas () is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita. Kansas is a landlocked state bordered by Nebraska to the north; Missouri to the east; Oklahoma to the south; and Colorado to the west. Washington & Jefferson College (W&J College or W&J) is a private liberal arts college in Washington, Pennsylvania. The college traces its origin to three log cabin colleges in Washington County established by three Presbyterian missionaries to the American frontier in the 1780s: John McMillan, Thaddeus Dod, and Joseph Smith. Kansas City (abbreviated KC or KCMO) is the largest city in Missouri by population and area. Lecompton, Kansas
Lecompton (pronounced ) is a city in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 588. Lecompton was the ''de jure'' territorial capital of Kansas from 1855 to 1861, and the Douglas County seat from 1855 to 1858. Anti-slavery Lawrence became the ''de facto'' capital during the latter part of this period, when the county seat was moved there. This time period was known as Bleeding Kansas, due to the violence perpetrated by the pro-slavery, and to a lesser extent the anti-slavery, factions in the eastern part of the state. The Territory of Kansas was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from May 30, 1854, until January 29, 1861, when the eastern portion of the territory was admitted to the United States, Union as the Slave and free states, free state of Kansas.
