Sami Mohammad
Sami Mohammad Ahmed Saleh (born October 1, 1943) is a Kuwaiti sculptor and artist. He is most known for his bronze sculptures. Most of his artwork deals with the ideas of freedom, oppression, genocide and suffering. In 1971, he was commissioned to make a statue of Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah. He is most known for his ''Box'' series, ''Sabra and Chantila'', ''Hunger'' and ''Mother''. Mohammad's work was presented at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, which was the first time Kuwait participated in the event. He has written a book about his work and career, entitled ''The Art of Sami Mohammad'', which was published in 1995. Early life and education Mohammad was born in Kuwait on October 1, 1943. Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah
Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah (1895 – 24 November 1965, Arabic: ) was the eleventh ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait and commander-in-chief of Kuwait Military Forces from 29 January 1950 to his death in 1965; he became the first Emir of the State of Kuwait after the country gained its independence from Great Britain on 19 June 1961. Biography Abdullah was the eldest son of Salim Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah. He was the minister of finance from 1939 to 1940. He took power after the death of his cousin Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and also ruled as regent upon the death of his father until the election of Sheikh Ahmad. The anniversary of his coronation, 25 February, serves as Kuwait's national day. Unlike his predecessors, Abdullah was more pro-Arab than pro-British. Jabra Ibrahim Jabra (28 August 1919 – 12 December 1994) ( ar, جبرا ابراهيم جبرا) was a Iraqi-Palestinian author, artist and intellectual born in Adana in French-occupied Cilicia to a Syriac Orthodox Christian family. His family survived the Seyfo Genocide and fled to the British Mandate of Palestine in the early 1920s. Jabra was educated at government schools under the British-mandatory educational system in Bethlehem and Jerusalem, such as the Government Arab College, and won a scholarship from the British Council to study at the University of Cambridge. Following the events of 1948, Jabra fled Jerusalem and settled in Baghdad, where he found work teaching at the University of Baghdad. ''Kul al-Arab'' ( ar, كل العرب, meaning ''All Arabs'') is an Israeli Arabic-language weekly newspaper, founded in 1987. Based in Nazareth, the paper is Israel's most influential and widely read Arabic-language periodical. It is also distributed in the West Bank.
