Sambhu Mitra
Sombhu Mitra (22 August 1915 – 19 May 1997) was an Indian film and stage actor, director, playwright, reciter and an Indian theatre personality, known especially for his involvement in Bengali theatre, where he is considered a pioneer. He remained associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) for a few years before founding the ''Bohurupee'' theatre group in Kolkata in 1948. He is most noted for films like '' Dharti Ke Lal'' (1946), '' Jagte Raho'' (1956), and his production of ''Rakta Karabi'' based on Rabindranath Tagore's play in 1954 and ''Chand Baniker Pala'', his most noted play as a playwright. In 1966, the Sangeet Natak Akademi awarded him its highest award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for lifetime contribution, then in 1970, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, and in 1976 the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Sangeet Natak Akademi (The National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama in English) is the national level academy for performing arts set up by the Government of India. History It was set up by the Indian education ministry on 31 May 1952 and became functional the following year, with the appointment of its first chairman, Dr. P. V. Rajamannar. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, inaugurated it on 28 January 1953 in a special function held in the Parliament House. Rabindranath Tagore (; bn, রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর; 7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941) was a Bengali polymath who worked as a poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter. He reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of the "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful" poetry of '' Gitanjali'', he became in 1913 the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Chenda Tar
The Chenda ( ml, ചെണ്ട, ) is a cylindrical percussion instrument originating in the state of Kerala and widely used in Tulu Nadu of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in India. In Tulu Nadu (Coastal Karnataka), it is known as ''chende''. It is greatly identified as a cultural element in Kerala and Tulu Nadu. This instrument is famous for its loud and rigid sound. A Chenda has two sides, the left side called " Edamthala" (ഇടം തല)(Left Head) and the right side " Valamthala" (വലം തല)(Right Head). The "Edamthala" is made of only one/two layer of cow skin and the "Valamthala" will have a five/seven layer skin, so as to have a bass sound. The skin are dried in the shade and fastened on wooden rings (Chenda Vattam, ചെണ്ട വട്ടം) made of the trunk of a locally available palm tree (Eeranpana) or bamboo, using a gum prepared from the seed of a tree called "pananchi maram". Gunanand Dangwal (1914 or 1915 – 2000), better known by his nom de plume Pathik was an Indian freedom fighter who played a leading role in the Tehri uprising. He is known for his translation of Ramayana to ''Garhwali Ramayana'' (called ''Garh Bhasha Lila Ramayan''), making it easier to be used in plays ('' Ramlila'') in Garhwal region and compositions of folk and patriotic folk songs. Tulsi Lahiri
Tulsi Lahiri (7 April 1897 – 22 June 1959) was a Bengali actor, director and play writer. Early life Lahiri was born in 1897 in a zamindar family of Naldanga village, Rangpur of British India. He passed B.A and B.L and started his lawyer career in Rangpur court. While he came to Alipore Kolkata, Ustad Jamiruddin Khan recorded two of his songs and inspired Lahiri joined in His Master's Voice company as music director. Career Lahiri acted on stage and in number of films as actor, vocalist and instrumentalist. He performed initially in silent films then worked in more than 50 movies. He became popular after releasing his play ''Duhkhir Iman'' and ''Chhenra Taar'' which were successfully run in Bengal. He made an orchestra which was often used in stage dances. ''The Indian Express'' is an English-language Indian daily newspaper founded in 1932. It is published in Mumbai by the Indian Express Group. In 1999, eight years after the group's founder Ramnath Goenka's death in 1991, the group was split between the family members. The southern editions took the name ''The New Indian Express'', while the northern editions, based in Mumbai, retained the original ''Indian Express'' name with ''"The"'' prefixed to the title.
