Biography Thornton was a member of the national team roster for several years, from 1989 to 1995 competing at two World Championships; 1990 held in Malaysia and 1994 held in Australia. The Opals not qualifying for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona probably cost Thornton her only chance to compete at an Olympic Games. In the domestic Women's National Basketball League (WNBL), Thornton played 230 games for Bulleen Boomers (1984-87), Melbourne East (1988-91) and Dandenong Rangers (1992-96). In 1989, Thornton won the Maher Medal for the Australian International Player of the Year. Thornton was also twice named to the WNBL All Star Five, in seasons 1991 and 1993. Basketball at the 1992 Summer Olympics was the thirteenth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It included the sport of basketball's men's and women's competitions of the 1992 Summer Olympics. The games were played at the Pavelló Olímpic de Badalona. 12 men's teams and 8 women's teams participated in the tournament. This was the first time that NBA players were eligible to play in Summer Olympics basketball, following a decision of FIBA in April 1989. The Dandenong Rangers were an Australian professional women's basketball team competing in the Women's National Basketball League ( WNBL). The club is based in Dandenong, Melbourne, Victoria. The team was founded as the Dandenong Rangers, however before the 2019–20 WNBL season began the team was rebranded to the Southside Flyers, adopting a new logo, colour scheme and nickname. The Melbourne Boomers are an Australian professional basketball team based in Melbourne, Victoria. The Boomers compete in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) and play the majority of their home games at Melbourne Sports Centre – Parkville and the State Basketball Centre.
