Sam Worthen
Samuel Lee Worthen (born January 17, 1958) is an American former NBA player who currently is touring as the coach of the Washington Generals, the team that perennially loses to the Harlem Globetrotters. He was well known for his play at the Rucker Park Tournament. Sam Worthen was an All-American point guard at Marquette University from 1978 to 1980 under coach Hank Raymonds. He led the Warriors in assists during his junior year and scoring and assists in his senior year. Worthen led The Warriors to a win over 10th ranked on the road against Notre Dame in 1980. Worthen was named to Basketball Weekly's second team after his junior and senior seasons. He was also named to Sports Page magazine's first team, United States Basketball Writers Association first team, UPI, third team and top newcomers of 1979, Playboy magazine pre-season basketball edition. Long Island Surf
The Long Island Surf were a professional basketball team based in Long Island, New York. They played 14 seasons in the United States Basketball League (USBL). History The franchise was established in 1985 as the Long Island Knights, and played in the first USBL season, finishing with a 9–15 record. The team did not participate in the 1986 season but did return for the 1987 edition, ending the regular season as the 4th ranked team and qualifying for the Postseason Festival (the USBL playoffs), during which they reached the semifinals, where they lost to the Rhode Island Gulls. In the 1987 season, female player Nancy Lieberman played for the Long Island Knights. In the 1988 season the Knights ended at the bottom of the table with a 3–27 record. United States Basketball League
The United States Basketball League (USBL) was a professional men's spring basketball league. The league was formed in 1985 and ceased operations in 2008. The USBL started in 1985 as one of the first basketball leagues to play a late-spring to early-summer schedule. The league quickly became known as a development league for players, with many players moving up to the National Basketball Association, NBA and many more playing in Europe after stints here. In 1996, the league made a stock offering, a rarity among sports leagues. However, in later years, the league declined as rival leagues appeared and USBL had a tougher time replacing teams that folded. 1980 NBA Draft
The 1980 NBA draft was the 34th annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on June 10, 1980, at the Sheraton Centre Hotel & Towers, before the 1980–81 season. In this draft, 23 NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The first two picks in the draft belonged to the teams that finished last in each conference, with the order determined by a coin flip. The Boston Celtics, who obtained the Detroit Pistons' first-round pick in a trade, won the coin flip and were awarded the first overall pick, while the Utah Jazz were awarded the second pick. The Celtics then traded the first pick to the Golden State Warriors before the draft. Hank Raymonds
Henry C. Raymonds (March 5, 1924 – December 6, 2010) was an American basketball player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head basketball coach at Christian Brothers College from 1955 to 1961 Marquette University from 1977 to 1983. Raymonds was also the athletic director at Marquette from 1977 to 1987. Biography Early life At St. Louis University High School, Raymonds was a three-sport standout in baseball, basketball and football. He played one season each of varsity basketball and baseball at Saint Louis University before entering the US Marines in 1943. Following World War II, Raymonds returned to St. Louis University and earned three additional letters each in basketball and baseball, and was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team as guard in 1946. Entertainer's Basketball Classic is a basketball tournament held at Rucker Park in New York City. It was founded by Greg Marius in 1982. In 1986, the original Rucker Park Tournament became the Entertainers Basketball Classic. The Harlem Globetrotters are an American exhibition basketball team. They combine athleticism, theater, and comedy in their style of play. The Washington Generals are an United States, American basketball team who play Exhibition game, exhibition games against the Harlem Globetrotters. The team has also played under several different Pseudonym, aliases in their history as the Globetrotters' perennial opponents. Function The Generals exist primarily as a part of the Harlem Globetrotters' act, effectively being Straight man (stock character), stooges for the Globetrotters. While the Globetrotters play tricks and spectacular displays of skill for the crowd, the Generals attempt to play a "normal" game of basketball.
