Sam Lufkin
Samuel "Sam" William Lufkin (May 8, 1891 – February 19, 1952) was an American actor who usually appeared in small or bit roles in short comedy films. Career Born in Utah, Lufkin spent most of his career at the Hal Roach Studios where he made over 60 films. In over half of these, he appeared alongside Laurel and Hardy, again mostly in small parts, but occasionally in more substantial roles, such as an irascible cop (''The Music Box''), or an irate motorist ('' Two Tars''). After Laurel and Hardy left Roach in 1940, the grim-faced Lufkin mostly appeared in further bit roles in Hollywood feature films before his death of uremia in 1952. Although the film begins in Scotland, a large part of the action is set in British India. Plot After escaping from jail where they had "one more week to serve," Laurel and Hardy travel to Scotland as stowaways on a cattle boat, where Laurel (as "Stanley McLaurel") believes he is heir to his grandfather's fortune. As it turns out, Laurel has only been bequeathed a set of bagpipes and a snuff container. Plot In a packed courtroom, a judge (Harry Dunkinson) thanks spectators Laurel and Hardy for their crucial testimony in helping to convict Butch Long ( Walter Long), a notorious and violent criminal. The judge then sentences Butch to life in prison, which prompts Stan to ask, "Aren't you going to hang him?" Infuriated and confined in a straitjacket, Butch turns to Stan and Ollie and threatens the " squealers", vowing that he will escape prison, find them, "break off" their legs, and "wrap 'em around your necks!" It was the duo's first starring feature-length comedy film, produced by Hal Roach and Stan Laurel, directed by James Parrott, and originally distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1931. Plot As with its predecessor, '' Blotto'', the film is set during the Prohibition.
