Sam Conrad
Sam Conrad (born 27 October 1980 in New South Wales) is an Australian former representative rower. He was a national champion, a world champion and an Olympian like his father and grandfather. Rowing pedigree Conrad's grandfather Maurice Grace from the North Shore Rowing Club in Sydney raced the Australian coxless pair at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and placed fourth. Sam's father Tim Conrad was a New South Wales King's Cup winner from the UNSW Rowing Club and later the Sydney Rowing Club who rowed in the six seat of the Australian men's eight at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal who finished fifth. Club and state rowing Conrad was educated at Brisbane Grammar School where he took up rowing. His senior rowing was from the University of Queensland Boat Club. Mercantile Rowing Club
The Mercantile Rowing Club is based in Melbourne, Australia on the Yarra River. It was founded in 1880 and has occupied its current site since 1885. More than 40 Mercantillians have represented Australia at Olympic Games. Club history A group of sportsmen interested in the advancement of amateur rowing met at Young and Jackson's Hotel on 19 September 1880 and the Mercantile Rowing club was born. William S Boyd was a driving influence and the club's first Captain. The club was initially named The Junior Warehouseman's Rowing Club and then changed its name in 1881. Boats and facilities were borrowed from the Greenlands boatshed next to the Prices Bridge until 1884 when the member's decided to lease land and build their own boatshed at the club's current location. Marc Douez
Marc Douez (born 20 September 1981 in Victoria ) is an Australian former national champion and world champion rowing coxswain. Club and state rowing Douez' senior coxing was done from the Melbourne University Boat Club. He was first selected to represent Victoria in the men's youth eight who contested the Noel F Wilkinson Trophy in the Interstate Regatta within the 2001 Australian Rowing Championships. On seven occasions between 2003 and 2010 he coxed the Victorian senior men's eight contesting the King's Cup at the Australian Interstate Regatta. He steered those eights to victory in 2003, 2006 and 2007. In Melbourne University colours Douex contested national titles at the Australian Rowing Championships. Coxed Pair
A coxed pair is a rowing boat used in the sport of competitive rowing. It is designed for two persons who propel the boat with sweep oars and is steered by a coxswain. The crew consists of two rowers, each having one oar, and a cox. One rower is on the stroke side (rower's right hand side) and other is on the bow side (rower's lefthand side). The cox steers the boat using a rudder and may be seated at the stern of the boat where there is a view of the crew or in the bow (known as a bowloader). With a bowloader, amplification is needed to communicate with the crew which is sitting behind, but the cox has a better view of the course and the weight distribution may help the boat go faster. When there is no cox, the boat is referred to as a "coxless pair". A coxless four is a rowing boat used in the sport of competitive rowing. It is designed for four persons who propel the boat with sweep oars, without a coxswain. The crew consists of four rowers, each having one oar. There are two rowers on the stroke side (rower's right hand side) and two on the bow side (rower's lefthand side). Junior World Rowing Championships
The World Rowing Junior Championships is an international rowing regatta organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). A rower or coxswain shall be classified as a Junior until 31 December of the year in which he reaches the age of 18. After that date, he shall be classified as an Under 23 rower. During Olympic years it is held at the same location as the Senior World Rowing Championships. The first FISA Youth Regatta was held in 1967 and has been held every year since then, being raised to the status of FISA Junior Champs in 1970 and Junior World Champs in 1985. Many European countries send athletes not up to the standard for World Championships to the Coupe de la Jeunesse.
