Salvinia Herzogii
''Salvinia'', a genus in the family Salviniaceae, is a floating fern named in honor of Anton Maria Salvini, a 17th-century Italian scientist. Watermoss is a common name for ''Salvinia''. The genus was published in 1754 by Jean-François Séguier, in his description of the plants found round Verona, ''Plantae Veronenses'' Twelve species are recognized, at least three of which (''S. molesta'', ''S. herzogii'', and ''S. minima'') are believed to be hybrids, in part because their sporangia are found to be empty. ''Salvinia'' is related to the other water ferns, including the mosquito fern ''Azolla''. Recent sources include both ''Azolla'' and ''Salvinia'' in Salviniaceae, although each genus was formerly given its own family. Jean-François Séguier
Jean-François Séguier (; 25 November 1703 – 1 September 1784) was a French archaeologist, epigraphist, astronomer and botanist from Nîmes. He studied law in Montpellier, during which time, he developed a passion for botany. He was a friend and collaborator to Scipio Maffei, with whom he took an extended scientific tour throughout Europe (1732–36). In 1755 he became a member of the Académie de Nîmes, serving as its ''secrétaire perpétuel'' from 1765 to 1784. In 1772 he became a member of the Académie royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. The plant genus ''Seguieria'' (family Petiveriaceae, Loefl., 1758) commemorates his name, as do the botanical species ''Ranunculus seguieri'' ( Vill., 1779), ''Euphorbia seguieriana'' ( Neck., 1770), and '' Dianthus seguieri'' ( Vill., 1779). Anton Maria Salvini
Anton Maria Salvini (1653–1729) was an Italian naturalist and classicist who lived in Tuscany. An accomplished linguist, he is noted for his translations of texts in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Biography Born in Florence, at the age of 12, he began studies under Jesuits. Among his fellow students was future cardinal Giovanni Battista Tolomei and future bishop of Florence, Ansaldo Ansaldi (1651–1719). In 1669, he was sent to the University of Pisa to study jurisprudence. He became a member of the ''Accademia degli Apatisti'', founded by Agostino Coltellini (1613-1693). At Pisa, he studied under Bartolomeo Cheti. In 1679, he graduated with a doctorate in canon and civil law. He was sent to work under a lawyer Andrea Poltri, but passed the time reading and studying texts. He was not functioning well or interested in being a lawyer, but he gained the reputation of a scholarly polyglot, knowing multiple languages. Sporocarp (ferns)
A sporocarp is a specialised type of structure in the aquatic ferns of the order Salviniales whose primary function is the production and release of spores. Sporocarps are found only in the Salviniales, a group that is aquatic and heterosporous, but the structures are very different in the two families of the order. In the Salviniaceae family, the sporocarp is nothing more than a modified sorus, a single cluster of spore-producing tissues enclosed by a thin sphere of tissue and attached to the leaves. In the Marsileaceae (water-clover) family, the sporocarp is a more elaborate structure formed from an entire leaf whose development and form is greatly modified. A sorus (pl. sori) is a cluster of sporangia (structures producing and containing spores) in ferns and fungi. A coenosorus (plural coenosori) is a compound sorus composed of multiple, fused sori. Webster Parish (French: ''Paroisse de Webster'') is a parish located in the northwestern section of the U.S. state of Louisiana. The seat of the parish is Minden. As of the 2010 census, the Webster Parish population was 41,207. In 2018, the population estimate was 38,798. Doyline, Louisiana
Doyline is a village in southwestern Webster Parish in northwestern Louisiana, United States. The population was 818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minden Micropolitan Statistical Area. Under a cited cost-saving realignment plan, the Webster Parish School Board closed Union Elementary School in Doyline in 2011, as Doyline High School absorbed the elementary students. The order Salviniales (formerly known as the Hydropteridales and including the former Marsileales) is an order of ferns in the class Polypodiopsida. Description Salviniales are all aquatic and differ from all other ferns in being heterosporous, meaning that they produce two different types of spores (megaspores and microspores) that develop into two different types of gametophytes (female and male gametophytes, respectively), and in that their gametophytes are endosporic, meaning that they never grow outside the spore wall and cannot become larger than the spores that produced them.
