Salisbury Township is one of fourteen townships in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The township had a population of 28,594 according to the 2000 census and is currently the most populous township in Rowan County. Geographically, Salisbury Township occupies in central Rowan County. Large portions of the city of Salisbury, the county seat of Rowan County are located in the township. In addition, the towns of Spencer, East Spencer, and a small portion of the town Granite Quarry are located in Salisbury Township. The township's northern border is formed by the Yadkin River. Spencer, North Carolina
Spencer is a town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States, incorporated in 1905. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 3,267. History The town was named for Samuel Spencer, first president of the Southern Railway, who is credited with establishment of the railroad's mechanical shops at the site in 1896. The site was approximately the midpoint of the railroad's mainline between Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC. As the shops were being built the Southern Railway developed a town, also named Spencer, alongside the shops for worker housing. Initially, the Southern partitioned 85 acres into 500 lots. Instead of creating a traditional "company" town in which the workers rented houses Southern sold the lots to workers or businesses for $100 apiece. Granite Quarry, North Carolina
Granite Quarry is a town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,930 at the 2010 census. History Granite Quarry was originally named Woodville when it was founded in the late 1800s. However, the first post office in the town was established under the name of Woodsides in 1891, after a prominent family in the area named Woodsides. The name was officially changed to Woodsides when the town was incorporated on March 7, 1901 by the North Carolina General Assembly. Jerry L. Shuping was the first mayor. Yadkin River
The Yadkin River is one of the longest rivers in North Carolina, flowing . It rises in the northwestern portion of the state near the Blue Ridge Parkway's Thunder Hill Overlook. Several parts of the river are impounded by dams for water, power, and flood control.
