Irvine Creek (Ontario)
Irvine Creek is a creek in the municipality of Centre Wellington, Wellington County in southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is in the Great Lakes Basin and is a right tributary of the Grand River. The creek begins at the confluence of two unnamed tributary streams in geographic West Garafraxa Township near the settlement of Dracon and flows southeast towards Lake Belwood. Before reaching the lake, it then turns southwest, then northwest and reaches the settlement of Living Springs. It turns southwest, passes under Ontario Highway 6, enters geographic Nichol Township, and reaches the community of Salem. Elora Gorge Conservation Area
The Elora Gorge is a popular tourist attraction located at the western edge of Elora, Ontario, Canada, which is 25 km north from the city of Guelph. Elora Gorge Conservation Area is one of many conservation areas owned by the Grand River Conservation Authority. About The Grand River flows through the bottom of the gorge, approximately long, with limestone cliffs reaching high. It was formed from glacial meltwaters from the previous ice age. The area includes a park with camping sites, hiking trails, and is also popular for kayaking and tubing. Floradale is an unincorporated rural community in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is part of the township of Woolwich in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. The community is located 5 kilometres (3 miles) to the north of the town of Elmira, Ontario and 20 kilometres (12 miles) to the north of the city of Waterloo, Ontario. Conestogo Lake
Conestogo Lake is an Reservoir, artificial lake on the Conestogo River in Wellington County, Ontario, Wellington County in Southwestern Ontario, Southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is a reservoir with a flood control dam. History Flood control measures had been first used in the 1890s and also by the construction of the Lake Belwood, Shand Dam that gave form to Lake Belwood in 1942, but a long term solution was still needed. The dam was proposed by the then Grand River Conservation Commission in 1952, but construction did not begin until 1955 due to local disputes, Hurricane Hazel and lack of government funding during the Korean War. Construction of the dam was completed in late 1957 (roadwork and other items not relating to the dam control were completed after) and officially opened in October 1958. Arthur, Ontario
Arthur (population 2,450) is a community located just north of Highway 6 and Wellington Road 109 in the township of Wellington North, Ontario, Canada. Formerly an independent village, Arthur was amalgamated into Wellington North on January 1, 1999. History The village was named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Settlers began arriving in 1840. The area was first surveyed in 1841 by John McDonald and then officially in 1846 by D.B. Papineau. During the first survey in 1841, the population of Arthur was 22 people. Over the next 15 years this number rose to 400 and by 1900 the population had risen to just over 1500. The saw and grist mills on the Conestogo River encouraged people to settle here. In 1851, a post office, church and school were organized. Development increased in 1872 when the train line of the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway reached the village which was incorporated in that year. Alma, Ontario
Alma is an unincorporated rural community in Mapleton Township, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. History Pioneers began settling along the Elora Saugeen Road, which forms the main street of Alma, during the 1840s. Alexander MacCrea and his wife settled here in 1848, and built a store. The "MacCrae's Corners" post office was established in 1854, and MacCrae was postmaster. In 1854, the settlement's name was changed from MacCrae's Corners to "Alma", after the Battle of Alma. James Ledingham and his family moved to Alma in 1864, and built a saw and chopping mill. In 1865, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was established in Alma. The church moved to a new stone church in Alma in 1892. The Wellington, Grey and Bruce Railway built a line through Alma in 1870. The line was eventually taken over by Canadian National Railway, and was abandoned in 1983. The Alma railroad station has since been destroyed. Centre Wellington District High School, or CWDHS, is a fully composite high school located in Fergus, Ontario. The school was originally called Fergus High School and was constructed in 1928. Fergus is the largest community in Centre Wellington, a township within Wellington County in Ontario, Canada. It lies on the Grand River about 18 km NNW of Guelph. The population of this community at the time of the 2016 Census was 20,767, but the community is growing as new homes are being built for sale. Fergus was an independent town until 1999 when the Township was formed by amalgamating the Town of Fergus, the Village of Elora, and the Townships of Nichol, Pilkington, West Garafraxa, and part of Eramosa.
