Saint Rose Academy
Saint Rose Academy, located in Birmingham, Alabama atop Red Mountain, is a private, co-educational Catholic elementary school run by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia. History Saint Rose Academy was established in 1956. The school was originally the home of Terence Mackin who gave his home to the Dominican sisters of Nashville so that a school could be created. His sister Sister Aloysius Mackin helped with the creation of the school. In 1962 more classrooms were added to the Mackin house. A few years later it was the first private school in Birmingham to desegregate. In 1993 the gym building was built which contains three classrooms as well as a multipurpose sport court and music room. A few years later the school bought the Discovery Place building. Campus Saint Rose Academy's campus is located just above the Red Mountain Expressway Cut. Red Mountain is a long ridge running southwest-northeast and dividing Jones Valley from Shades Valley south of Birmingham, Alabama. It is part of the Ridge-and-Valley region of the Appalachian mountains. The Red Mountain Formation of hard Silurian rock strata lies exposed in several long crests, and was named "Red Mountain" because of the rust-stained rock faces and prominent seams of red hematite iron ore. The mountain was the site of the Sloss, Republic Steel, Woodward Iron and Tennessee Coal and iron mines which supplied ore to Birmingham's iron furnaces. The best displays of the mountain's geological strata occur at the Twentieth Street cut near the Vulcan statue and at the U.S. Route 31 highway cut leading into the suburb of Homewood. Red Mountain Expressway Cut
The Red Mountain Expressway Cut, also known as the Red Mountain Geological Cut, is a section of Red Mountain that was blasted and removed in the 1960s to allow the Red Mountain Expressway to enter downtown Birmingham, Alabama. This highway links Birmingham with its southern suburbs of Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Vestavia Hills. It has spurred suburban growth towards the south of Birmingham. This section also provides the route for U.S. Route 31 (US 31) to the south (the Montgomery Highway) and US 280 to the southeast. The resultant cut exposes geological strata spanning millions of years (150 million years of geological time within of exposure), including the red ore seam that spurred Birmingham's development. A new species of Lower Silurian (middle Llandovery epoch) phacopsid trilobite, '' Acaste birminghamensis'', was first collected from exposures on Red Mountain. John Carroll Catholic High School is a co-educational private school in Birmingham, Alabama, United States and is one of six Catholic high schools serving the Roman Catholic Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama. The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA), based in Montgomery, is the governing body for interscholastic athletics and activities programs for public schools in Alabama.
