Saint-Idesbald
Saint-Idesbald (; nl, Sint-Idesbald) a village at the Belgian West Coast, part of Koksijde, which also includes Oostduinkerke. Its name refers to Saint Idesbald (or Idesbaldus), a 12th-century abbot of the Abbey of Ten Duinen. In 1931, George Grard set up his studio at Saint-Idesbald, where his house became a rendezvous of artists including Pierre Caille, the Haesaerts brothers, Edgard Tytgat and Paul Delvaux. Paul Delvaux
Paul Delvaux (; 23 September 1897 – 20 July 1994) was a Belgian painter noted for his dream-like scenes of women, classical architecture, trains and train stations, and skeletons, often in combination. He is often considered a surrealist, although he only briefly identified with the Surrealist movement. He was influenced by the works of Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, but developed his own fantastical subjects and hyper-realistic styling, combining the detailed classical beauty of academic painting with the bizarre juxtapositions of surrealism. The Paul Delvaux Museum (french: Musée Paul Delvaux) is a private museum in Saint-Idesbald, Belgium, devoted to the life and works of the painter Paul Delvaux. It was established in 1982 by the Foundation Paul Delvaux and houses the world's largest collection of Delvaux's works. History In 1982, the Foundation Paul Delvaux took the initiative to establish the Paul Delvaux Museum, a private museum in Saint-Idesbald, Koksijde municipality, devoted to the painter Paul Delvaux (1897–1994). Delvaux had a personal connection to Saint-Idesbald and had built a house and studio in the style of a fishing cottage there in 1951. A driving force behind the museum was Delvaux's nephew Charles Van Deun, who on the foundation's behalf purchased Het Vlierhof, a former fisherman's cottage that had been enlarged into a hotel-restaurant. Koksijde
Koksijde (; french: Coxyde ; vls, Koksyde) is a town and a municipality in Belgium. It is located on the North Sea coast in the southwest of the Flemish province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises apart from Koksijde, the villages of Oostduinkerke, Saint-Idesbald and Wulpen. On 1 January 2018, Koksijde municipality had a total population of 21,957 on a total area of 43.96 km² (17 sq mi), which gives a population density of 499 inhabitants per km² (1251/sq mi). George Grard
George Grard (1901–1984) was a Belgian sculptor, known above all for his representations of the female, in the manner of Pierre Renoir and Aristide Maillol, modelled in clay or plaster, and cast in bronze. Grard was born in Tournai to a family of modest means and entered the Académie de Tournai in 1915, but his real calling as a sculptor became apparent when he followed a course in sculpture in 1922 with Maurice De Korte (1889–1971). In his native city he met Pierre Caille, and later, in a Brussels foundry, Charles Leplae. Having won the Prix Rubens (1930), he left for Paris, where he encountered the sculpture of Charles Despiau, Aristide Maillol and Pierre Renoir, which influenced his mature style. Paul Haesaerts (15 February 1901 – 31 January 1974) was a multi talented Belgian artist. Born as Pauwel Helena Alfons Haesaerts, son of Benjamin Adolf Jan Baptist Haesaerts and Emma Philomena Spillemaeckers. As an artist he worked as an architect, filmmaker, etcher, painter, screenwriter, carpet designer and illustrator. Especially as a documentary filmmaker he was well known internationally. Pierre Jules Louis Lucien Ghiskain Caille (11 January 1911, in Tournai – 24 October 1996, in Linkebeek), was a Belgian sculptor, painter, engraver, ceramicist and jeweller. Caille briefly attended the Academy of Tournai (1926) and the advertising section in La Cambre (1931), and ceramics (1938) and is also close to Roger Guérin (1896 in Jumet – 1954 in Bouffioulx), Henry van de Velde, George Grard, Charles Leplae. Oostduinkerke
Oostduinkerke (; french: Ostdunkerque ; vls, Ôostduunkerke) is a place in the Belgian province of West Flanders, where it is located on the southern west coast of Belgium. Once a municipality of its own, Oostduinkerke now is a sub-municipality in the municipality of Koksijde. The name "Oostduinkerke" translates as 'East Dunkirk'.
